GTG 1898-P Morgan Dollar Newly Graded - Update Grade Posted

So of you may know the grade on this from my last thread. I bought a new camera and tried to get some better pics. These aren't bad but I need to work on my lighting I think.

If you know the grade please wait. I would like to hear what anyone thinks of the photos with any suggestions for lighting. Here it is:

Play GTG and let me know what you think pf the pic and the coin. I'll post the grade later.

My pics just aren't doing it. I wish I knew the secret to great pics on BU coins.

Here's a hint, it does indeed have a plus but no one has guessed the grade yet.

It's official, my pics stink. I'm going to try and get something better in just a bit.

Just to spice things up, here's an 1886-P I had graded at the same time. Do you think it's lower grade than the 1898 or higher and what grade do you think the 1886 is?

I'm going to try to shoot better pics after lunch. I've been reading a bit and have a few ideas to improve the pictures, plus a dug out an old copy stand to play with.

So far no one has guessed right, but with these pics it doesn't surprise me.

The 1886 looks nicer, IMO. The cheek is rounder, luster is stronger, and the strike appears to be better (it's hard to tell from your pics, which I agree could use fine-tuning).

Try as I might I couldn't get any better pictures worth posting. So without further ado, here is the slab:

I was thrilled with the 66+ of course and the 1886-P went MS-65. I'll probably have this 66+ Trueviewed and update the thread with good pics later. There are no dark spots on the coin, those are just reflections in my poor photos. Thanks for playing!

My guess would have been 64+ shot at a 5.

Every time I try that it just gets lost in reflections. I'll keep messing with it. I know it's the lighting because circulated coins come out nice and sharp.

Is the lighting diffused well enough?

I tried to diffuse the light but the coin just came out flat with no detail. I'm using CFL bulbs maybe I should try an LED.

    I'd suggest Jansjo lights.

You can pick them up at IKEA, for about $10 each.

  • So as an MS66+ it looks like an $880 coin. What was the source of the coin?

It's going to take more than lights to make me believe that baby is a 66+. Smoke and mirrors? Maybe!

The price guide on a 66+ is $1400. Pop is 68 with 77 higher. I bought the coin raw about 4 years ago and finally sent it in just recently. I think it was in a Dansco of Morgans I bought. The 1886 came from the same source. These were the two nicest ones of the bunch. I knew it was nice but I was shocked to see it come back as a 66+. The pictures I've posted are terrible. I've compared this coin to all the other 1898 66+ coins on eBay, Heritage, and Coinfacts, and I think in hand it compares nicely. I don't think it's a dog for the grade at all. I just wish I could get some decent pictures. I may box it up with some other coins today and ship it off for the Trueview special.

  • Text A number of these in 66 have sold for $880. Not sure how much the plus is worth.
  • GManGMan Posts: 790 ✭✭
Hard to say what it might sell for. There is one 66+ listed on ebay right now for $1150 I think. Several 66's seem to have sold around the $600 mark.
