NEWP: Carson City Trade Dollar

stealerstealer Posts: 3,998 ✭✭✭✭
I recently picked up this tougher Carson City date. Although it isn't reflected in the prices, I find that the 77CC is one of the tougher coins in the series, and it has certainly been difficult for me to locate a nice example.

I love it. Exactly what an XF coin should look like.

That is a very attractive coin. VERY attractive. Congrats.

And, yes, I agree that the 77CC is somewhat underrated, sort of like the 74CC and 75CC too.

I agree about the 74cc being similar to 77cc. Their rarity is masked buy the number of them available chop marked, look for one in a wholesome collector grade unmolested and it will take some time.

That is the perfect xf40 stealer of a great coin, well done. I sort of like it better than my AU

Nice! I went looking for a CC Trade Dollar this past summer with the exact, dirty "crusty old west" look that yours has. I ended up with an 1874-CC in NGC AU55. Of course, it may have circulated in China, not the old west, but without chop marks, I'll have to assume otherwise. Yes, 1877-CC is a little tougher than prices indicate.

I like it , too! It looks like the long lost twin of my XF40, which I also searched for for quite a while...

Very nice example! I agree this date is underrated and recently purchased this example. Currently she is graded MS-61 by NGC. I'm hoping she will grade AU-58 at PCGS after a soak in acetone to remove what appears to be PVC.

image I need the same to near completion of a circ. CC trade Dollar set, and I've been frustrated more in the search for this date than for the '78-CC. I'm impressed image

About 15 years ago, I was offered a drop dead gorgeous gem crusty XF45 78CC TD for a little over $3K. I passed because I wasn't collecting at that grade level. But, OMG, that coin had a more even crusty coloration than the OP 77CC piece.

nice coin. i like that look when a coin does not look like it was screwed with none to much.

    Thanks for the compliments guys.

@EVP, I agree, 74CC unchopped are difficult to find nice as well. I don't currently own one.
@crypto, I might consider a straight trade for your AU, maybe. image
@shish, I thought that coin looked like a 58 from the auction images, good luck!

    Very nice coin!

Interesting comments about the 74-CC and 75-CC vs. the 77-CC. I've always found the 74-CC and 75-CC much easier to find than the 77-CC. That is certainly true chopmarked, but also true unchopmarked --in my experience anyway.

Great coin, the reverse is especially nice. I have nothing to add here about the 77-CC, they are super hard to find in nice condition as already stated. My collection holds an AU50 when the rest of the set is mostly AU58-62.

Look at the pops then compare to the 78-CC pops and pricing. The pricing is outta whack.

My comment wasn't to say that the 77CC is as scarce as the 74CC and 75CC in un-chopped grades. Rather, I was commenting how they are all similarly under appreciated. The 73CC, 76CC and 78CC are all "well known" and always fully priced. The 77CC isn't really more common than the 76CC or 78CC, but yet is priced less.

So, anyway, to reiterate, my comment was about relative appreciation not relative scarcity.

Speaking of Trade Dollars, I miss hearing from TDN. Perhaps he's very busy being a good dad, or he might be hibernating like a bear. image
