Two questions on an 1864 Indian Cent

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,409 ✭✭✭✭✭
1. Can you tell if the coin is an 1864 L if the "L" can't be seen?
2. Does a repunched date add any value to the coin?

    1) Typically without the "L" visible, you have to go by the pointed/blunt bust (above the 1 in the date)

I couldn't tell for sure with the slightly blurry pic if yours was pointed enough, but...

    2) RPD #001 kind of confirms it

So, would the pointed bust on my coin tell it's an "L"?

Yes, you have an L variety. Here is what Non L bust looks like.

The 1861-L cent with the doubled date is unusual but not that rare. Many years ago, when I was in my teens, I had one that was smooth but had uniform green corrosion. The sharpness grade was VF, but of course the condition of the metal made it worth a lot less than the VF grade coin. I think I paid $3 for it and sold it for $4.

I think that the 1864-L is a bit overrated as to price and rarity. I've just about as much trouble finding an 1864 Bronze cent as I've had finding the 1864-L.
