Has anyone every done an analysis between price guides?

I was researching a coin and noticed there was about a $1000 lower price on the NGC site than on the PCGS site, so I kind of chuckled to myself thinking "OK, NGC knows they over grade that coin so a VF30 might be a VF25 in PCGS"

I have a bias since when I look at an NGC coin I tend to drop it to the next lower grade on the PCGS price guide.

There is a lot of data there so I was wondering if anyone ever download both and did a comparison between them?

Perhaps there are bargains to be found?

IMO, both price guides are far from reality, which is confusing, because they both offer access to accurate recent auction data. If I were running a price guide, I'd have an algorithm that averaged the last ten sales, or the last twelve months of auction results for the same grade and list that as wholesale with maybe a retail column that simply added 10-20%. That's typically how I calculate the prices I'm willing to pay, the percentage sliding based on eye appeal of that specific example.

Calculating the value of widgets is pretty easy. When a special piece comes along, throw price guides, algorithms, and generic APR's aside.

Boosbri is spot on. Especially for a coin for which an example hasn't been sold in a long time. If the last sale of some coin is ten years ago, what is the coin worth now?

I found the new CoinWeek price guide for silver eagles very interesting. Hopefully they will expand it to other series. If you've not seen it, click the link to the price guide at the bottom of the story I've linked above. I hadn't realized more than 20% of the total coins graded by PCGS and NGC are silver eagles and that here are over 1000 different labels. The prices by holder and label were also very informative and nice to have in one place.

They're both wrong but I use PCGS as a grading guide. I think NGC is almost always over graded and sometimes on PCGS. Pricing guide is only for folks who want the wrong information.

If NGC "almost always" overgrades, and PCGS "sometimes" overgrades, that would indicate NGC is more consistent, assuming they consistently overgrade by the same number of points. They would just be using a different scale.

Every time somebody makes a crossover. Some dealers buy at one and grade at another and line the pockets with difference. image

There are a lot of Bust and Seated coins I will be happy to buy at Greysheet, especially the rare coins.
