<< <i>I tried to look at a few coins and kept getting the below message. I guess I'll write off DLRC for a while until they get their site working.

I ran Systems Test and Release Engineering departments at large Silicon Valley firms for 20+ years. We would spend as much time testing as developers spent coding. And then products would be in-house and field-tested in alpha and beta test runs. Coding fixes followed that, then more in-house testing and follow-up field testing.

Nothing kills business faster than releasing a poorly tested product.

Agreed. I did test for a major software firm for a couple of years before moving up into a different role. Regrettably, I have noticed that test is getting minimalized at most/all firms image
First it was tech writers (no more manuals and no more instructive bits).

I tend to stay away from things that break from easy use, or even slightly more intensive use. I will avoid the DLRC website for a bit until it gets handled better.

So don't release it until it's ready.

Sorry...I don't agree it's okay to go live with a dysfunctional product and expect customers to understand and be patient while it's fixed. It wasn't okay for ObamaCare and it's not okay here. A small glitch or two is one thing. Major malfunction is another.

I think there's a major difference between not being able to get medical insurance and not
being able to purchase a coin. Who really gets hurt here except DLRC? As a software
engineer, I agree with you in principle, but neither of us was privy to the factors that
went into the decision to go live with the current state of the site.

So many folks on this forum are ignorant as to what it takes to get a state of the art website running on a range of mobile devices and desktops (PC or Mac) in this day and age. Gone are the days of a single landing page with all products on one page that is static HTML - unless you're a dealer with less than 40 coins, that ain't gonna work folks. You also need a robust server (a dedicated one) to serve up all this content - so many dealers scrimp here, but paying the extra hosting fees result in a fast website make all the people happy. That said, all you collectors that like to play critic on something you have no knowledge about are most likely running on an antiquated PC with low in 720k DSL or free dial-up. Get real here folks....

Their site also might need time to propagate (big word from my buddy who's in the know) for all to see across the mighty world wide web. They also might want to look at their permissions and owner settings at the server level for their catalog of product images, because I can't pull up product images - results in the error everyone else is posting.

So summing it all up, it's quite an undertaking to bring all the bells and whistles to the masses. So stay calm, and post elsewhere if you have nothing nice to say.You know who you are! >>

And, some of us have been in the trenches with projects like this, on even a bigger scale, and have seen what it takes to make the roll out (RTW "release to web") much more palatable than what has been described here....

That said, I appreciate, sincerely, DLRC's folks for the way they have come on the forum to address things. They aren't badmouthing anyone who has stated any issues, and are moving forward to get things rolling. What they have done is no small undertaking, but by the same token, switching from a test server to a production server is no longer, in this day and age, something that should be that problematic.
Many times, the issues are because the product team (program managers) didn't create a good enough framework, working with the devs and test, and the test wasn't done by actual testers and/or those who would actually use the features/site.

I bid on there auction for my first time a few days ago . Now, I can't get the sight to work besides just loading. I cannot sign in , or contact them via there sight. Messaged via PM here , but no response. May cancel my bids and never do that BS again image

  • << <i>Hey Folks,
Appreciate the announcement. We didn't come out with too much press yet as we knew we'd have some growing pains today. The site once we work out the bugs this week should run faster than the old one and the images will indeed be much clearer and a higher resolution. But, you can't just re-image 9000 coins immediately, so it will come gradually.

As for the photography, we actually do photograph almost every coin over $5,000, and we're working to grow those numbers. If you ever see a coin that you'd like a better image of, just give us a call or shoot us an email, we're always willing to do that for you.

Thanks again and if you have any feedback, please let us know. We're working to make it better!
    Thanks,
    John Brush >>

    Looks good! I like it.

Well then, if you're familiar with what it takes then you should probably back off. You're always slamming folks here on the forums that are doing their best to keep things fresh with their budget. Remember they aren't a fortune 500 company with unlimited budgets.

From the way you talk, you must have worked for or currently do work for a large company with a big budget. I'm sure all dealers would love to have a slick website on a Enterprise level server with the financial backing and software support of Microsoft, Apple, etc. but they don't.

For the record, DLRC has been live on a dev server for some time prior to going public.

Shame on you, Bochiman. I guess you walk on water.

    To the DLRC people:

As a long-time customer of yours there are a couple of things I'd like to see with the new and improved website (beyond the new and better photography which is coming in the near future)...

One feature I would like to see is the ability to make alterations en masse (like changes in grade) to coins currently on your Want List. Currently, to make changes you have to go single coin by single coin deleting them individually and then re-adding them to your Want List with whatever changes you wanted to make. This can take FOREVER if you have multiple changes to make. How about a single page listing all of your Want List coins and the ability to make multiple changes to multiple coins and then click a button and VOILA - all your requested changes are made all at once?

A second request: how about adding "+" grades as an option for the Want List? It'd be nice to be alerted when that elusive MS66+ coin shows up in DLRC inventory without having to be notified of every single one of the "common" MS66 coins that show up.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

Nope, no walking on water, and nope, I am not talking fortune 500.
Nor am I attacking them. I do think some more work should have been done but maybe you need reading comprehension to understand I haven't been attacking them.
I know small start-ups that do more, with less. Of course, I live in an area that has a lot of these types of people in the work force. Where they are, the supply may be much less. Doesn't change the fact of testing and planning. Two areas that many companies skimp on when it comes to software these days.

  • After all of the conversation, I thought I'd jump back on and give an update. Our devs worked tirelessly today to get the site fixes in place and things are running quite smoothly. I personally answered about 50 emails from collectors who were having trouble yesterday and we've done everything possible in 24 hours to address the issues.

I would like to take a moment to THANK BIG TIME the supportive members of the Forum here for their support and understanding. The them, I say that you cannot overestimate our level of appreciation on this matter. DLRC is a family of 15 employees (and their families!) who live, breath and rely on the success of company. We love coins and we love making our customers happy. Also, I have taken notes of your suggestions and we are working on those. (#1 on the list of features us to allow for up to 100 items per page on search results.)

To the naysayers, we did not launch the new web site with any trivial level of testing or effort. In total I would estimate we have spent in the mid-six figures to develop the new web site and back-end software to power the new site. The complexity is mind-numbing for such a "small" company. Because the new web site was incompatible with the old back-end software we could not actually put up a real-world test site. It was simply too difficult and costly for a company of our size.

So we tested, tested, tested and launched knowing there would be some issues to fix ASAP. In our case, we had a few significant import issues which wreaked havoc on back-end performance, so the more users came on to the site the slower it got, until finally it crashed. image Similar to a DOS (denial of service) attack. The more users, the more clogged it got.

We also experienced login issues because of the data import and those are about 95% corrected at this time. Bidding has been restored and the auctions are running nicely and we've gotten more orders from the site today than same time last week. So it's going much better now.

My sincere apologies to the community for their aggravation but I assure that we are dedicated to improving the web site on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. It's a labor of love for me and we've got some big numismatic announcements to make soon, so we need the site rolling smoothly.

    Thanks again!

    Sincerely,
    John Feigenbaum

    Hi John,

Thanks for the update. And as one of your supporters, you're welcome. image

FYI, the search engine still needs work: "1938-D 5c" now returns no results.
"1938-D Buffalo 5c" returns 14 items, as expected.

The site was working quick and smooth today for me. I don't use the search too often, just browse through, so I can't comment on that. I bid on a couple, and made an offer that was accepted... which doesn't happen as often as I would like! LOL!

site is running more quickly, nice.

One problem I had before is still there:

go to my account, click on order history, then click on order information, all works well up to there. Then when I click on the item I ordered, it kicks me back to the home page.
  • Site was running slow yesterday.

But today...WOW! Awesome. Quite frankly one of the best numismatic sites out there.

I like the new site, and the fact the big fish have come and posted over here. The 25% off one time coupon was a real surprise for having to deal with a few bugs.

Went smooth for me. Looked through the Jeffs........the colorful 1938 MS66FS is not FS. One of the 1943-P MS66FS has a nice nick on the steps as well. Well, the site did say they wanted feedback. image

sorry John I'm in the business and I don't really buy that you couldn't have tested it - there's a whole bunch of ways you could have done some cloud-based testing and least got some volume under your belts. But its water under the bridge.

Couple things you should be mentioning - maybe you could put them in that red top dev bar before you make it invisible.

    * You may need to reset your password coming from the old site.
    * You need to have a form of payment established before you can bid

    Also
    * Please create static default redirect page nothing screams poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape

For the record it's WET here in the NW so we all regularly walk on water.

I'm in the business too (for 30+ years). He didn't say they couldn't have tested it. He said that
given the cost constraints it was more practical to fix the issues after going live.

When I try to update my account information and hit save it kicks me off the internet.

Where would this coupon be located?
  • Hi all,

Most of the big issues are resolved but still seeing a few login issues on certain places (not all) of the mobile devices. Sigh. We are working on all of them as fast as possible.

In the meantime, the coupon code for 10% off is DLRCNEWSITE.

Please us it, and share it. Thank you all for your support.

I just checked out the new site. Worked good for me. image

It is easy to navigate and the search and filters work really well.

I like that you can select all the different search specifics that you are looking for and weed out all the rest to save time. image

"What they have done is no small undertaking, but by the same token, switching from a test server to a production server is no longer, in this day and age, something that should be that problematic."

I have no issues at all with Bochiman's legitimate points. This thread will likely result in upwards of a month of free advertising on these coin forums for DLRC. Had the website been running flawlessly when this thread started, perhaps the free advertising would have lasted a couple days. This is certainly making lemonade from lemons right? If I was a consignor of DLRC, I would love that this thread keeps going. Now, buyers even have a coupon for 10% off their purchases. John is also here addressing things the way a company should. That is the key. If, and when, my son and I launch improvements to our website, I will likely present the site the same way DLRC did here. Of course, these type of posts are quasi-spam in nature. But, these have been accepted here over the years, as compared to a company posting that they got in a great coin for sale this week (which belongs over on the BST board).

I wish John the best with his new endeavor. If memory serves me right, I have spent close to (if not) $0 in purchases over the past few years at this site. Yet, I consistently spend millions a year buying modern coins. I will certainly try on this end to break that streak this year. In fact, when you read this John, be aware that I have a huge current want list of modern coins. Perhaps a rep from your office can call me next week and I can briefly discuss it with him or her.

    John-

Something else missing - a YEAR and MINT filter on the searches ... also how about a way to exclude DETAILS graded coins

(here's the user story for your team: I want to buy 1853-1860 Seated Liberty coins for my typeset - VF35-XF45 - and I need only New Orleans coins to complete my set.)

Finally, if I want to change coins, the only way I've found to do it from search results is to go back through the top "Buy Coins" menu. I can change with the denomination (from Seated to Barber), but I can't go from Seated 25c to Seated 50c
