The look of the upper serif on the D indicates machine doubling to me...

This is a nice example of Machine Damage Doubling. The metal on top horizontal of the D has been "pushed down" by the die moving downward after the strike. Notice the build-up of metal at top of the vertical bar and upper part of the curve. This metal was displaced by die movement.

Edited to add...this must be a test, because usually with this level of MDD there is evidence in other areas. Do you not see any similar damage on other parts of the coin?

No test.... there are no surprises, just a potentially helpful thread. I have been shown a lot of these by folks just starting into the RPM or OMM world.

Here is another photo of the same mint mark, a little different angle.

I would also say MDD from the images, do you have one that shows the entire date as well? Typically MDD will be evident there as well.

  • The second provided image gives the look of roundness to the shelf and thus looks to be a RPM. Very interesting with ther different images. could you make them a little smaller and place them next to each other?
  • if you look at this image of your mint mark the upper left corner of the D is showing an indent giving the look of a RPM. The shadows on the original image are a bit dark.
