Ancient gold coins found off the coast of Israel.

OT, but so what.

I just read a report on the Daily Mail about a discovery of about 2000 gold coins dating back about 1000 years in the sea off of the coast of Israel.

When the details come out it will be a very interesting story. The article has some photographs of the coins. They look like they were minted yesterday.

These appear to be from the Byzantine Empire so they are not considered to be ancient coins which is reserved for coins made before the fall of the Roman Empire in 476AD. Neat hoard. I bet they didn't realize that their government would steal them and are now wishing that they kept it secret.image

They are Islamic, not Byzantine. Have no idea of the vintage.

Took another look and you are of course correct.

"Members of a diving club in the Roman-era port stumbled across the treasure, weighing nearly 20 pounds, by pure chance while on a dive."

It just makes you wonder what's yet to be found.

Exactly. The Brits have the right idea with treasure trove. Basically the British Museum gets first dibs on anything that it does not have for the collection, with the rest going to the finder along with compensation for what was kept.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical for Israel to be claiming ownership of Islamic coins?

I lost about 2000 gold coins in a previous life.
    Those must be mine.

An amazing find... what a thrill. The fact that the government claimed them is a deterrent for treasure hunters - at least as far as reporting finds. I do cache hunting with my metal detector and the first rule of cache hunters is 'Never, ever talk about your finds.'.... Cheers, RickO

Those coins have been in the water for nearly 1000 years and yet they look almost new. Says something about gold doesn't it!

  • What is the best guess as to original owners of these gold coins?
