1876 3 Cent Nickel - 100 Degree Rotated Die

Just found this coin. I haven't been able to find any other known examples of significant rotated dies for this year or for any 3 cent nickels in the 1870's for that matter. I know there are examples from 1865 - 1868 (especially 1865)... Thought I would ask the board if anyone has come across any, or even heard of any?

Thank you in advance for sharing.

1876 isn't listed on the RotatedDies census website.

And I don't recall seeing that date w/RR either.....

    Nice find...

  • I have not seen one of these before, you could have a discovery coin in your hands.
  • Just wanted to say, I appreciate all of the responses!

    Thanks again!

    Thanks for sharing your photos.

Do you have access to Allan Gifford's book?

I don't have it, but at least one forum member does.
  • Hi there,

Unfortunately I don't have access to it, but would love to hear from anyone that does. I looked for the book online, but can't even find 1 copy available for sale.
Some coin books are just impossible to find. If I am not mistaken... only 250 were printed?

    Thanks again.

Try contacting the better known auctioneers of numismatic literature, such as George Kolbe. If he does not have a copy in inventory, he probably knows where to locate one.

I see four others listed here: Rotated die census

  • Regarding the rotated die census, I only see 1865, 1867, and 1868? I don't see any for 1876. I have seen past sales for 1865 and 1867 (which I think are more common).
    Also, 1876 was a lower mint year (only 162,000) compared to 1865 (11,382,000) , 1867 (3,915,000), and 1868 (3,252,000).

    Thanks again.

In the 2007 thread below, the forum user Mark said he has a copy. Maybe send him a PM?

It's also in the ANS library, and in the ANA library (available for loan to ANA members).

P.S. If anyone in the SF Bay Area has a copy, I'd like to borrow it for 24 hours (or can do a short term trade for a half dime reference book or two).
I'd like to scan it, and then put a table of the Gifford die pair IDs on my website.
This would make it possible to answer questions about whether certain die varieties are known in this book.

Interesting. I look forward to seeing how this pans out.
  • Thanks again for your help and recommendations. I sent Mark a PM to see if he might be willing to help shed some light. I will post any info he shares with me.

    Thanks again!

  • Mark you are a nice guy and a class act... and THANK YOU for taking the time to look that up!!!!

Quote from Mark's PM for the board:
"Gifford reports a rotated reserve of 135 degrees counter clockwise. He says this die has a repunched 6 in the date with “an upper loop & ball of a secondary ‘6’ visible slightly below or south of the upper loop & ball of the primary ‘6’.” He has a hugely blown up picture of the repunched date and I have to say that the repunching is really small. Gifford does say that this particular die state is scarce, which might matter to the one (or zero?) collectors of 3CN by die states."

Sounds pretty cool.... and pretty rare... but like you said... it probably only matters to the one or zero 3CN collectors out there.

Again I really appreciate your taking the time to look that information up.

Still a cool find in a bag of 120 that I bought for $10ea.

Thanks again to everyone on this board!

    Sincerely,
    Glenn-

    Good work, you guys.
Gifford's book is looking "insanely great" like I suspected. :-)
Thanks to Mark for helping out!
