People that resuscitate years old threads should

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,417 ✭✭✭✭✭
try creating their own thread and just link to the original if they really think it is pertinent.

Just foolish seeing old threads brought back that have links that are no longer valid, pictures that no longer show, data that is 5-7-10 years or more out of date, etc.

I'm all for bringing back information that is valuable and not reinventing the wheel, but some folks just seem to think bringing back old threads is cool, etc.

Yeah yeah, I'll get off my high horse now and stop complaining for a bit image

It really doesn't bother me, when members do this, and I am not against it but having invalid websites and broken images can be frustrating.

I just typed a reminder in my 2020 Outlook calendar to resuscitate this thread on 2-15-20. That's a Saturday by the way.

Yeah, 'specially when they do it mostly to promote something they wrote somewhere else......

Even if the information is pertinent and useful, it would be better to create a new thread.

If it relates to something current or and update I don't mind it, but just resurfacing them for no reason is rather irritating

Agree. Unfortunately it's usually for the later reason rather than the former reason.

I tried blocking an eBay bidder from COINBOY's thread but he had been NARU'd - probably years ago since the thread was 5+ years old.

Rule 1) This is not a public forum. This is a PCGS forum paid for by PCGS and provided for PCGS customers to exchange information regarding collecting US coins. We make the rules this is not a democracy.

so now point where this thread fits that rule

And, that's just a piece of it...there is so much that can/does change over time, that bringing up really old threads, just causes confusion.
It generally doesn't harm anything, but I have seen old threads brought up about people's health/etc, and people don't always look at the date and it can cause concern/confusion.

I do not understand why those that feel a need to bring them up can't just create a new one and reference it. I know, I know....for some, it is just a game. They love messing with people and bringing up really old threads and providing to real value to the reason they do it.

In the end, it doesn't hurt me at all....but, as a forum participant, I just think it would be classier and more appropriate for those that do it to respect others and mention it is resuscitated at the time they do it AND why, or create a new one.

I can't tell you how many times I've opened a thread only to find I'm reading something from years ago. I consider it a waste of my time. Totally agree with linking it instead of resurrecting it.
Silverpop, Why don't you post a change find and make this thread coin related.

I humbly request an exception for Bear's "Tales of Coin a lot" threads.

These are classics, and never can be replicated. Bear was just as good as they come, and man, he sure bought some great coins near the end of his life.

Good memories of splitting a gut laughing for me!

    I will second that.

I rarely see a thread that deserves being resuscitated. It used to happen often here, but nowadays it seems only to be done by one poster. I find this action mildly annoying. I never wanted to make an issue of it, other than I usually refused to click on his links and read his articles.

As an aside, there's a thread that gets resuscitated every few years that I deem worthy. It's a very funny thread, posted by Greg Margulies ATS, about what esoteric stuff ICG (or was it ANACS?) would be able to grade and encapsulate. That's one of the rare threads I really enjoying re-reading every few years. It's like re-reading LoTR every few years.

Oh, I agree...there ARE a few threads that can be revived and all is good....no hidden agendas in reviving them, etc.
Then, there are the "I'm bored, let's see what I can drudge up and contribute nothing to", the "hey...this was a volatile thread...let's bring it up and see who we can get banned because of it", and the "I'm an attention whore and want people to check out my stuff, so I will revive this thread and add in a 'look at me' link but won't really add anything IN THE thread itself" type of revives.

Ones that people like, like the coinalot threads, educational like Frank's old "everything you wanted to know about Franklin halves" threads, etc, are all good to have and people really don't get confused by those....and no one seems to be pimping something with them. Know what I mean, Vern? image

It's a shame we can't bump the original Poe58 thread. A forum classic!

  • ms70ms70 Posts: 13,954 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've done it accidentally. I go back & look at stuff, forget it's years and years old, then reply like it's a current thread. Then afterwards I realize it's a classic thread.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

It can be annoying.....however, as stated, some are valuable and can serve a purpose. The old studies on tarnish and it's progression, slabs of various vintage and the ever informative history series on Commemorative's are a few that should be in a reference library here on the boards. Cheers, RickO
