1938-D DDO's - Jefferson Nickel Varieties

BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,774 ✭✭✭✭
I was trying to locate the post that I reported finding a killer 1938-D DDO-001 after someone wrote about it a while back. I would like to thank whoever that was because I have since discovered the DDO-003 1938-D and awaiting the return of an additional discovery DDO-004. The DDO-004 will have similar, but different die scratches going through LIBERTY as the other two DDOs. I have not located a DDO-002 yet!

Nice finds! I posted this in 2012... not sure if this is the post you saw. I switched hosting companies and will try to get the image links updated tonight. The coin depicted wound up grading AU58 at ANACS, sold for around $40 and was DDO-001.

    cmerlo1,
This is the post! I remember making those comments and then found one at the January FUN Show that ended up as a PCGS MS66! Since then I have found a second example of both DDO-001 and DDO-003. I'm either very lucky or there are a few out there to be found! It seems that the die scratches wore off pretty quickly on the dies, as I have only noticed them in earlier die strikes. I hope to have the DDO-004 pictures in here soon!

Well, you're welcome then! I'll post the images here too- I actually consider them to be some of the best coin photos I've taken.

There's one die-I believe #8-which shows very obvious doubling on Jefferson's nose. I've always liked that one. Anyone have a picture?

cmerlo1 - You nailed it. There are the die scratches through the BER!

koynekwest - You would be talking about the 1938 DDO-008.

That's the one, BigDowgie-thanks. I used to have several of that die but that was 25 years ago-I have no idea where they are now.
