Interesting article that seems to have some misinformation about ASEs link fixed "Grading a sca

Here is the link to the article and it states that all ASEs are MS69 or 70 so no grading is necessary. What are your thoughts? Titled PCGS grading scam.

  • I've always thought that grading bullion was funny (except for proof or special issues, etc.). But unless they've been handled or used as a pocket piece (ie if they are direct from the mint) that statement is virtually correct with relatively few counter examples.

However I didn't find that statement in that link.

Funny a lot of colorful Silver Eagles have been seen in MS67 holders in my journeys on the web. image
  • How many 1999 PCGS MS70 ASEs do you see? I know the NGC MS70 go for some serious money so I am confused by the article but if they will sell me all their 1999 NGC MS70 at spot I am all over it.

your Link is wrong. Does not go to the article.

I would assume 90% of all ASE's off the assembly line are 69 or 70

If a dealer were to send a monster box of silver eagles to NGC or PCGS for bulk grading, they would slab all the '69 and '70, and return all the others ungraded. So I don't think the article stating all the bullion ASE are 69 and 70. However, my experience with mint products like the "w" and proof eagles, they always come back 69 or 70.

Any dealers here who have submitted a box and can tell us the breack down of 70, 69, and those not slabbed? I'm sure it varies from year to year, box to box, mint to mint, but some idea would be cool.
  • Sorry the link is now fixed and states that having them graded is a scam.

and actually the article says "most" are 69/70, not all. Big difference
  • Two sides to this point with part of it being very true.

Grading isn't nessicary for modern bullion as they are all basicly the same and the things that make them turn are often just as prevalent in holders.

The part that is relevant is the fact that certification is necessary for inclusion in the registries which are very popular for modern coins because they're easy to find and collect. So a few bucks for a protective holder that allows you to register your coin seems like a good deal to me. Relying on it to tell you it is as made or even worse paying huge sums for plastic rarity can be big mistakes.

I do not believe for 1 milisecond that the grading of Silver or Gold Eagles is a Scam.

I do, however, believe that Telemarketers are SCAMMERS.

I agree....I have seen many ASE's graded 68 and even 67. I do not consider it a scam at all.... yes, the yields are (and should be) high, however that does not lessen the value (to collectors who care and dealers who sell) of a grade and authentication. Cheers, RickO

I agree. PCGS and NGC are offering legitimate services. Now whether it is a wise idea that people submit these is another thing all together. And I agree that telemarketers are a huge problem.
  • Of course, they would be whistling a completely different tune if they sold certified gold and silver. If CMI sold NGC/PCGS certified eagles, the article would read something like, "The safest way to be sure that you're not buying counterfeit gold and silver is to buy coins that have already been certified by one of the two major TPGs. NGC and PCGS certified gold and silver coins always carry a premium to non-certified coins. Blah, blah, blah"

EDITED TO ADD: Wait...they do: CMI Then I have no clue why they would say certification isn't worth the money and then sell them through their website.
