  • It is centered with little to no tilt that is why it is $2500.

This one presents itself as well as any PSA 6 around. Actually has better eye appeal and centering than some PSA 7's. Unfortunately I had to tap out at 2k, with buyers premium that card is dang near hammering out at 3k now.

Is there a purpose to "outting" these auctions shortly before they end? A link to the final price would be more prudent, especially considering that some people may have a self-serving interest in bidding and don't appreciate the added eyeballs and potential bidders such "outtings" bring. But then again, if it is a case of the OP having a skin in the game, I guess then it would make sense, but if not, why not wait until it closes as a simple courtesy to those that may be or are bidding?

Great centering and no print lines. Beautiful card. SMR = $1,300

My apologies cuzz buzz. It is not a private auction. I think everyone on the planet is aware of Huggins and Scott. No...not my consignment. Just amazed at the near PSA 7 level price on a PSA 6 card.

When a card in top grade can sell for what this one can I am not surprised when you see a variance of a few grand on a lower graded copy.

If you are in the market for this card and really want one that you will be happy with. Why not pay more and get one you are thrilled with?

You could show this card to a novice collector and they would say wow nice card. There are some EX-MT grade cards you can't.

I thought you can only "out" an auction when it was a steal. When it is already in the stratosphere in regards to price, is it really "outing" an auction?? Sorry, there are no steals with this one.

I think what others are saying is that by brining attention to this auction before it closes, you could cost the winner more money. I know it has been done to me in the past on message boards, and I didn't like it. I am sure others feel the same way.

P.S. I'm not wanting to bust your chops, just giving my input.

it's an Aaron rookie guys. like not enough people already knew about it before Bobby's post. he was trying to bring attention to the fact it's going for double the norm. if you're holding a graded Aaron rookie, you're smiling about it today. i know i am. image

I don't believe Bobby did anything wrong. Was he really supposed to wait until the auction ended before posting. He might have forgotten the point by then.
  • ReggieClevelandReggieCleveland Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭✭✭
The point is, just wait until the auction is over. What one person perceives as a steal can be entirely different than another person. The conversation gains nothing by outing it before it closes. Just poor form and bad taste, IMO.

I knew that Aaron would go for big money as soon as I saw it in the preview. Gotta say, though, I didn't expect it it go as far into the stratosphere as it has. Just goes to show that there are collectors out there willing to blow past SMR and VCP when the card is right.

Stunning card. Looks at least as nice as the average 7. The grade is just a number. At the end of the day, eye appeal trumps all for the discerning collector.

It is not that easy to find well centered rookies like this in 6/7/8 grade. When a card like this pops up, the buyer better bid agressively. Those that are offended for Bobby "outting" the auction is complaining only for the simple reason that they wanted the card at "VCP" or a steal. Most private auctions like this won't allow anyone to bid in the auction at the last minute because of the 30 minute rule unless a prior bid has been placed. I find no fault in Bobby discussing this auction before it ends regardless of his motives that some may have against him. After all this is sports card forum.

this is worth some further examination as well.

i like VCP. i think it's a great source for information and convenience. but, relying too heavily on that information can be a curse.

when there are multiple examples to evaluate and the variances in actual condition lead to substantial differences in pricing, the "average" doesn't apply.

some cards are not "average". if not for a slab with a flip and a third party grader's opinion, the card in question would be evaluated purely based on its presentation.

who's to say that PSA 6 Aaron rookie might not command an even better price if it's removed from the slab?

Well, I've never really followed Huggins and Scott auctions. I can tell you if I saw this thread last night while it was still live, I might very well had made a run on the Aaron, just based on this thread alone.

I agree with what others have said about not posting these links until after the auction closes.. I am just one example of someone who missed it but may not have if I had been on this forum last night. I don't think it's realistic to think every collector on this forum knows about a PSA 6 Aaron RC at Huggins and Scott. If I'm the high bidder on a card and I see someone start to advertise it on forums before it closes, I'm pissed.

Then there's the issue of the very grey area of not knowing if it's the consignor posting the link to their auction or not. It just gets to be a very slippery slope that I think is best avoided. I have been guilty of it in the past too, but just saying I can see how it would be an issue

Amen. We've been seeing this phenomenon with greater and greater frequency in recent years, in which an anomalously good looking card hammers for a price that transcends its assigned grade. I'm reminded of the e90-1 Jackson at Heritage that was 1.5, and sold for around 22k. The recent PWCC 52 Mantle 4.5. Many others.

Focusing just on the card and not the sticker, I would call that a 7 or 7.5 all day long; major props to whoever stepped out of the VCP box and reeled in a gorgeous card-- one that probably satisfies their eye way better than even the usual 7s.

The grade is indeed just a number, like age. Imagine some guy saying, "Sorry, I only date girls under 30." And so they wind up blowing an opportunity to date Scarlett Johannsen or Sofia Vergara.

I don't know the OP. I have absolutely nothing against the OP. I also have no desire for the card in question or any other ulterior motives. I'm just speaking on the general practice of outing auctions -- any auction -- before it's finished. It's usually considered common courtesy to wait until the auction finishes.

As I said earlier, the discussion gains nothing by having it now as opposed to after the auction closes.

Those that don't want autions outed - will you guys speak up when an auction gets outed for a card that is overgraded.? Lots of that, and IMO it's no different. Those posts can impact a sellers acution negatively.

I say everything is fair game.

So am I to understand at least in this case an undegraded (ones opinion) card can actually be of a financial benefit in an auction. Interesting angle as it obviously promotes vigorous bidding, with the thought of making a "steal". That is very interesting as I still try to understand all facets of the grading card world.

Not to belabor this, but several points:

    1. Proper, or accepted message board etiquette has always been to not note active or soon to end auctions. Granted, these boards oft times lack most "proper" decorum or etiquette and I'm sure that most that have commented on the fact that it was a "public" auction or that "everyone" knew about it will not understand or accept this simple premise.
    2. No one was looking to "steal" or beat VCP on the Aaron card. The eye appeal and current state of the market has dictated that a premium was going to be paid for the card. However, by potentially adding at least one new pair of bidding eyes, the potential existed that the premium could have been extended several bidding increments.
    3. My initial post was neither a pile-on, nor a call-out of the OP. The only thing that may have been construed as such was the veiled reference to previous auction mentions by the OP that featured the OP's consignments.
    4. To those that think that the bidding was because the card is a PSA 7 or PSA 7.5 trapped in a PSA 6 holder, I think that some might get a brush up on their grading. That card was a gorgeous PSA 6, but that is exactly the holder that it belongs in. Unless someone has some sort of nefarious intent, the card does not present a bump "as is" and my supposition is that the final two bidders were in pursuit of a high end, top eye-appeal Aaron rookie.

Given the current market, Aaron remains one of the most underrated and underpriced of the all-time greats. While the price may have been staggering in relation to previous sales, all one has to do is compare this exemplar to those that have sold in the same grade the past several years and it is rather easy to see why the bidding was so aggressive.

Summary....of the three pages, i have mixed feelings because there are positives and negatives to posting auction before they end..
    Heres my conclusion..

    1. The question is whether the item is actually being posted by the AH or the seller in order to promote his item to increase the bids vs actually wanting to have an actual discussion. There has def been chicanery in the past...first time I've ever typed that word.

    2. I def appreciate being made aware. I think it's fun to watch some auctions. Ex...with unopened material setting new price records weekly the past couple of years. And with high quality vintage, RC etc setting new price highs...fun to watch some 1980s football RC getting $10,000+!!!

    3. Then again, shared by many, I hate it when I'm bidding or have found a hidden gem up for auction then all of the sudden it gets posted here which adds extra eyes, attention which may significantly increase my price. Aargh.

There's no single answer. Especially not knowing the true intentions of any particular OP.
