Howdy, I have finally joined after years and years of buying and selling from ma of you on eBay, coin shows, NCG boards and so on. I have submitted coins to PCGS for over 10 years through friends and group submissions but figured it was time to join the loony bin as I have been a lurker all the way back to the days of the open forum. I collect pretty much everything Texas from Republic of Texas and Gov't of Texas notes, Texas Nationals, County Script, Texas Bank checks fill in where there are no-known Nationals issued on that charter, Texas coins or "chits" and live by Medlar, Olsen and the TAMS journals and last but not in the very least, James Bevill (I went the next day aftr theft and bought a copy because it is everything I wish I had wrote but James did!) while the other 3 books were stolen during my last move to Dallas and replacing has proven to be a hens teeth!.
I obviously have a 7070 type set that I have prided myself on building 1 coin at a time, mostly VF/XF-MS and am not assumed to find a coin I like and crack her out to go in the Dansco. I am thinking of putting together a 65PPQ or better LT (Legal Tender) Red Seal $1928 $1 to 1966A (knowing the 1966A* is forget about it not). Considering Patterns if budget allows and am 1/3 the way done with the Dansco half-dime set and need to look at quality over quantity. I have been less focused of coins the last few years but it is time to catch up! If you have similar collector taste please shoot me a IM so we can exchange info, so when I find myself clueless you might be able to bail me out. TXH
To introduce myself I thought I would post my pride and joy, 8 year to find (outside of a auction where I went head to head with John Rowe and lost or paid so much for it it would truly bother me)
The back of the note, which was issued of the mid year 1837 i the real deal Texas Star Note! Exactly how many are known to survive??? Not more than a few dozen I can say with confidence. The signature is actually traceable back to a Texian who was a Indian/Mexican hunter who later went on to become one of the first Texas Rangers (The law man not the disappointing major league team that would be a minor league team if not for Texas money and Nolan Ryan begging and giving away free steaks with the purchase of a ticket!
NOW THE PART I NEED HELP ON! AAAARRRGGGG....... So a little over 3 years ago I got this metal, no idea what it was, but I read a post here about removing, green, thick, caked on corrosion with olive oil. I don't remember if I used extra virgin, virgin or plain olive oil. So, once every 6 months I used a wood tooth pick to gently pick and try to flake off loose green (not sure if it is corrosion as it doesn't seem to be pitting the metal, copper?, underneath the green concrete and I honestly though after 3 years this would have had time to soak it and loosen, at lest to pick off the crap, but one side is almost done and the other looks better, but I would say 1/2 way if that done. It appears to be a VDB designed metal and I don't have a metal or token book, so is this even worth it or a common 1970's, US mint gift shpt product?? Any of you guys and gals recognize it? Is it worth continuing?? Any idea as ti value if I get it done? Lastly, all the oils I mentioned are acidic, is there a "gone to far point" where I will ruin it by eating to much copper/bronze away by leaving her in too long> I appreciate it guys and look forward to contributing in the future, hopefully to help! Joja!
I change the olive oil every 3 years, this is what it looks like as I am about to change it for year for 4 soak, so this was the result of year 3 soak with year 3 starting with new oil

My name is Joe. Sometimes things in the shop show up that I have no clue about. I lurked for a long time before coming here for a numismatic baptism of fire, brimstone and camaraderie. My collection of books has increased , but my comprehension level remains low.
I cannot tell you about the medal but the history of that note is great.
Also, for the masses and others who may not post here, remember : You will know who is for you. They will not be against you.
Just as you know who is against you. They will not be for you.
I am PRO collector. PRO hobby, and pro people of all walks of life. Especially those in THIS hobby. Have a great day.
<< <i>The medal was issued by Metal Arts Company in 1961 in both bronze & silver nearing 7 ounces. Toivo Johnson was the numismatist that pushed to have these struck and had more made then the market could absorb. In the early to mid 90's the excess medals which his son inherited hit the market. >>
Broadstruck said it. Here's
some additional information.
My set in silver:

Can't add anything about the medal, but I like the Star note!
Have owned a few myself over the years, including one 'DOLLRAS' variety. Know what you mean about bidding against Johnny. He's a character. Have [bought from/sold to/beat out/lost to] him more times than I care to admit over the years.
You should head over and check out the currency forum. From time to time a thread pops up about the money of God's Country.
Hoard the keys.

Texian? Are you an Aggie too? (sorry, I just couldn't resist!)

Of all the numismatic loony bins on the internet, this is definitely one of them.
Regarding the medal, life's too short to maintain an olive oil soak for several years. I'd look into the professional conservation services to see if it's worth having them expedite the process.
