NEWP 1860 Seated Half

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Every now and then a coin presents itself that requires you to stretch beyond auction records. This was such a coin. A pre civil war date Seated Half graded by NGC image and verified by CAC.
This coin boasts strong mirror surfaces with multicolor toning on both sides. The obverse has deep blue with a firey red halo around the periphery. The reverse features deep lilacs and cobalt blue. I am thrilled to own the coin and hope it will stay in my collection for many years to come. Two images are below, one from the auction house and one taken with my iphone.

Feel free to guess the grade, and if you know, do not post it yet.

Thanks for looking!

Based on the 1st photo alone I would have said 66. But the 2nd photo opens up the 63-64 range. Really can't tell what hairlines are on the holder vs. the coin.

    MS64. Take the middle road.

    1) Drop dead gorgeous toning
    2) Wouldn't want to offer a grade based on the two completely different pics.
    3) The only possibly bad news is that you might not be fulfilling your goal of a civil war dated coin since the civil war ran from 1861-1865.

WAG 65. That plastic looks pretty scuffed up and needs some polishing or replacement, but the coin is awesome.

Absolutely love the lilac and the whole color palette.

About as civil war as you can get in 1860 is Lincoln was elected president though.

I am a history buff but one doesn't need to be. I don't think history should be changed to fit the hobby, the civil war started on April 12, 1861, so to state that the "about as civil war as you can get in 1860" is not correct. And Lincoln was elected on November 6, 1860, and his inauguration was on March 4, 1861. So I don't know what you are writing about with this particular issue.

Yes, I too passed history class. I was simply stating his 1860 coin was not a civil war date. About the closest tie-in to the war I could think of for 1860 was Lincoln was elected (not inaugurated). I wasn't changing any part of history here.

And... I still love the coin.

Oh my. Lovely. Congrats, Ankur. It's spectacular.

I don't think the 2nd set of pix does it justice.

Almost word for word what I was going to write, though I'm a NGC 63 on it.

Looks like a 62 or low 63 to me. The first set of photos make the coin look phenomenal. Also it isn't a CW coin.

It's not a series I know too well, but it looks like one to me.

    PR-64

I'm a big fan of blue toning. Great NEWP.

That is really a spectacular looking coin. I can't even speculate on the grade other than to say it looks at least MS 64 to me. (Or PR-64?) Congrats on your purchase of a stellar example. Any info on provenance would be appreciated once the grade is revealed!

Interesting coin, very tough to grade from those pictures, I'll guess MS64 and not a proof.

Posting my business strike example for comparison, particularly stars 1-3 and the weak S1 on reverse

Putting aside the Proof question...(I couldn't tellya) I'll say 65.
It'd be great if you'd re-post it someday if/when you have some accurate pics ! image

I'd love to see the coin in hand. Ill say 63.

Pretty coin with a razor strike on the reverse. Toning looks more like what you'd expect on a gem proof! Business strikes from this era usually tone brown. No guess on grade; the scuffy holder is going to make it impossible.

Good markers. I'd add that the lower half of the obverse rim is not as wide (or wired) like the upper half. Seems more beveled on the lower half.

The coin is in fact a business strike and graded by NGC as MS62!

I would love to get this true viewed but have no plans of crossing it at this time.

I pretty much agree with RR, I would have been a grade or two lower on each of his estimates ( And yes, as I typed this I see that that answer has been posted, but I came up with my grade before sseing the NGC grade!

If it looks like the 1st photo in hand, I like it. Congrats!

It must be a proof to have such color would be my guess. When proof coins are graded any flaws that are present will affect the grade. It's a VERY attractive piece but I do see a couple of blemishes. So, with that said my guess would be PR-63ish.
