What do you do with your old auction catalogs?

seanqseanq Posts: 8,683 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm gearing up for a move and I came across about three boxes of various auction catalogs, most from the late 2000s. Other than a few that I like to keep as references, I have no real use for them, but I hate to just throw them away. Are there any organizations that would take them as a donation (maybe the ANA library?), or would it be worth putting them up on the BST in small groups? If anyone is looking for any porticular catalog let me know and I'll dig through once we start unpacking.

I saved years of them. And then I moved. They got recycled.

I keep a very few landmark sales. The rest I give to my local club for the literature table at their shows.

I've probably brought >150 catalogs to shows with me and dropped them off at the front table. While it's a pain to drag 100 lbs or more in cats to a show, at least you know there's a chance they might encourage some future collector. Just recently I recycled about 50-100 catalogs from the 1987-2006 period that didn't seem to have much use to anyone. I just don't get a chance to go through them any more.

Pretty much what everyone else has stated. I used to keep them all, but this became a problem after several years so I only keep the ones that are meaningful to me. The others are given away or recycled.

Try to save as many as I can, especially the ones from 'significant' or 'well-documented' sales---the rest I recycle.

My headache. I still have all 1989-date of them. A few years ago, I re-cycled all my teletrade paper categories -/

The ones from Stack's never get thrown away - just don't have confidence I'll be able to find them on the Internet a couple years down the line.....

    This.

At a local monthly show I do someone (or maybe more than one person) brings in 25-50 catalogs and places them on a table at the show entrance. Long before the show is over, all those catalogs have found new homes.

I give them away, except for ones that have information that particularly interests me. I am already renting a storage bay to house numismatic books and auction catalogs that I seldom use. This, and occasional glares from the better half (she thinks so, anyway), has caused my collecting habits to change. I am becoming much pickier regarding numismatic literature as well as coins.

I donate them to my library for their annual book sale. They price them at $2 or so apiece, so it is a win-win.

Most of them get recycled, esp. the HA catalogs since their archives are so good.

Older catalogs w/o online access - kept the significant ones.

Leave a few in the waiting room at work - people enjoy looking at something other than People Magazine, esp. the people with brains. image

    +1

I've saved Spink-Smythe's as well for the same reason. Glad I did.
