BUMP for title change. This is the last time I'll try as there seems to be lack of interest.

The lighting shadows make it difficult, but they do seem to have differences.....Cheers, RickO

The coin on the left looks like a S/S and the position is definitely different than the one on the right!

They both look like the 'trumpet-tail' S to me... could be a variation in how they were punched, maybe?

If they are different, it wouldn't be the first time the mint switched punches in the midst of production. For example, 1952-D Washington quarters can be found with 3 different mint mark styles, including one that is not known to have been used again on any other year or series.

Other years that come to mind are 1943, where the 'trumpet-tail' style is rare on dimes and quarters, and 1946-1947 where serif and sans-serif S mintmarks were used on a number of denominations. The 1946-S dime with the sans-serif mintmark is a major rarity in the series.

These sure look different to me. The coin on the left looks like some type of S/S, and the position is in the "cup" of the device below. The one on the right is clearly higher. What's the year?

Double die on left and different on right. Love variety's.

Their positions are clearly different. So it's obvious they are not products of the same die marriage. The way the mintmark punches were struck could have created some variance in their appearance.

    What year is the half?

Lee, The one on the left looks like MMS-004 "Trumpet Tail", and the one on the right looks like MMS-008 "Tall Mintmark"
CONECA doesn't have listed which mintmarks would be found on the 54-S

True but then NO mintmarks are listed after 1946 for Half Dollars.

  • The answer to both questions is yes. You are crazy as you are a coin collector and they are different in appearance.
