1913 type 1 Buff . What do ya think??

I've owned this Buff for many, many years now. From time to time I pull out my coin albums and raw coins just to get familiar again and this one always gets me to look twice at it. I'm on the fence with the color on this one. One day it looks right and then the next time I look I'm not so sure. I find it extremely attractive and well stuck too. I would have sent this one in years ago but I'm bugged a bit about the color. I would grade this one 64+ to 65. What are your thoughts on the color. The reverse is over the top beautiful and I don't suspect the color here. It's the obverse that seems a bit off. But how could the color be off just on one side? Thank you for your time and thoughts. Joe

Here's a couple of better images I spent a little more time on.

    Spectacular.

The pundits can say whatever -- this is a superb example of old Wayte Raymond toning. I collect those albums (have a few!!), and have become an armchair aficionado of the toning they produce. This is a superb example of that.

The rainbow color progression where it shows up looks ok to me. Surfaces look 65 or better to me. I'd sort of expect a MS65 grade....possibly higher. I'd be disappointed with a 64+.

The obverse does seem to show an oval coloration band though not distinct all around.....from just above the date, into lower feathers, to top of hair, under Liberty, and into the mouth/chin area. Nice.

  • So CHD I do understand your concern with this coin. The same colors are present at different levels without a break. The blue on the obverse seems a bit different than the normal spectrum seen on buffalos but it does appear to be album toning from one of the old sulfured paper types as stated by DRUNNER. This does not mean PCGS will agree as we all know how they feel about blue on coins. I do not see much in the way of rub and the strike is strong showing decent details with some softness on the obverse. I think this should it grade NT would go 65 or better.

I can see why you like it. It's beautiful.
I see no reason that it shouldn't grade either.

Made me look more than just twice.
    Absolutely beautiful.

Graders are more impressed by luster on this issue than they are by strike or toning.

Guy is right. None the less, smart collectors of this series know better and go for strike over luster.

very eye pleasing example here...I LOVE IT
this displays what could be lightly cleaned areas amongst uncleaned areas...as something just seems off with the color not be banded or consistent in coverage

from what little i've put together
    if a buffalo isn't shiney and glowing...below a 65 it will stay

    others have stated it perfectly
strike and details bear very little on a buffalo's grade...they grade on condition of it's luster and frost of it's patina
like a patina only graded series it makes me scratch my head...LOTS

this image displays flat luster with no frost
i'd suspect it would top out at 64 but wouldn't bottom out much below that
64 on a good day....63 on a bad day...a really bad day they might no grade it for light cleaning

    all that aside
beautiful example as always from you

Great strike...should go 65....not a fan of tarnish, but this is unusual on a Buff...unusual, but I would deem it album tarnish (as DRUNNER said)....Cheers, RickO

Pretty is as pretty does. Now put that back and quit touching it.
