1878-S Morgan Dollar - Rare VAM or Something Else?

$337.00

It's not a Long Nock and it does not appear to be any of the high S doubled RIB's (VAM 22, 77, 111).

What else could it be? Two guys building a set of polished 78-S dollars just had to own this one?

Looks fake to me, something about the reverse just looks wrong...I have been wrong before.

No reason for that price that I can see.

Makes as much sense as anything I can come up with.
    When in doubt, don't.

  • It's 1878s rev 1878PAF(Paralell arrow feather). The PAF minted at SanFrancisco in 1878(rev of 78 and the early part of 1879(2nd rev). Then the rev die was changed to a SAF(slanted arrow feather)or 3rd reverse.

I would not be surprised to learn that it is a scarce '79-S Rev. of 1878 VAM. At least two bidders had to have recognized it as such for it to reach the price it realized.

That coin could never be confused for a reverse of 79.

    No way possible.

The bidding looks somewhat bogus. 2 bidders ran this up from $36 to $335. Looks like the under bidder just kept rebidding every few seconds until they uncovered the high bid. The under-bidder put in a nuclear bid of $332 at the $36 level and went to sleep for a couple of hours....and still lost the auction. Seller sells a lot of "salted" rolls for strong prices. But it's odd that most of their auctions only get 2-6 bids, while the above one got 84 bids....nearly all from 2 bidders. Good money for a polished XF/AU.
