1844-D Quarter Eagle ex Bass

JJSingletonJJSingleton Posts: 1,401 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just won this last night in the Stacks Bowers Auction. The 1844-D is one of the more common Dahlonega Qtr Eagles with a mintage of 17,322. Believed to be 175-200 extant. For Dahlonega that is pretty darned common. Even in mint state it is not a tough coin per se, but makes for a nice upgrade for my Dahlonega Type Set.

The label reads both Green Pond and Bass pedigrees. It is a Bass specimen for sure, but I feel the Green Pond pedigree is a bit disingenuous though. Although this coin was at one time part of the Green Pond Collection, it was replaced by the Arthur Montgomery/Leon Farmer specimen which is the finest 44-D $2.5 known. As such this coin was sold in 2001 and not a part of the Heritage Green Pond Collection Auction back in January 2004.

But in this case I can live with sloppy seconds.image

I am glad to reunite this coin with my 39-D $5 from the Green Pond Collection, as well as my 38-D $5 from the Bass Collection.

Comments and questions are welcome. Images from the Stacks Bowers. I will get this to Todd at Blucc soon.

Great coin, as RYK sez! I know the Bass pedigree, but I am not familiar with the Green Pond Pedigree. Is Green Pond a significant collection?

  • It take a pretty strong coin to bring me back from my self imposed exile.

This coin is one such piece.

Very high end, quite possibly an upgrade.

Nice enough that I thought of bidding on it.

Congrats. You got a wonderful coin.

The Green Pond Collection is one of the finest collections of Dahlonega Gold ever assembled. It was put together in only a half dozen years with the single goal of a complete set of finest known. As I recall, the high end market skyrocketed as this collection was throwing money to the wolves. The resulting collection was truly spectacular. This collection demonstrated that if you have a ton of money, you can put together sets of very rare coins in pretty short order. Money speaks very loud in this hobby.

that's a great looking coin. congrats. it looks like it was struck with a rusty die...or something. near the perimeters there's some rough looking fields kinda like you'd see on a territorial piece. that gives it a little extra character, i think.

Hey RYK, different collections. The Newman seated half is the sole specimen in my "Butt Ugly with Pedigree" Collection. I keep the sets separated as I am fearful the ugliness my rub off.image

Doug Winter discusses planchet roughness as the cause. Dahlonega was notorious for poor planchet preparation.
