<< <i>Is the referent for your "Its" (sic) the low money velocity? Maybe They are doing what the Experts say they "should" do, which is reduce debt and increase savings. Isn't that good? >>

it is good for the economy but not in the short term (as low MV indicates) and only in the long term if enough debt is reduced.

<< <i>Are those checks supposed to "support the economy as we once knew it"? I'd say, no, the baby boomer bubble trajectory was unsustainable no matter what. Regression toward the mean. >>

The people issuing them appear to hope so. The baby boomers created a thriving economy only to see it raped and pillaged by those with the power to do so. It could just as easily been carried on by the next generation if it had been protected from greed and corruption.

<< <i>I don't know about you guys, but the money velocity in my house has never been higher, we spend what we earn from my job (maybe a little more than that) and make up the difference with passive investment income, the remainder of which income and capital appreciation accumulates (and fluctuates in value, because it's invested) We've been nesting hard core for a decade now and have another decade to go until these little birdies fly the coop.

When I was a single guy, the dynamics were different, and they'll be still different someday when we're empty nesters. For now, busy busy busy and never been happier >>

A precious metal forum membership is not the place to find a factual slice of the American economic pie. Most members here have disposable income for PMs which means they have good income, are conscience of their personal debt, and take the time to understand the economy. Not your average J6P who is striving to provide for his/her family.

The velocity is a distressing indicator as it does not portend well for the economy.

"the economy", right, that's a concern that people have, a big BIG concern! also, "the climate", "the generation" and "the society" and "the nation" and "the planet" are very distressing to be concerned about!

Personally, I'm such a big BIG thinker that I'm concerned about "the galaxy" and I'll make fun of those who are "only" deeply concerned about the well-being of our little solar system. Provincial! image

I guess it depends on whether or not you have a future. Generally speaking, it's not the 45 yr olds, or the 55 yr olds, or the 65 yr olds who foment revolutions.

Need I not be concerned that a 28 year old is being disenfranchised by a lack of real opportunities, or should I simply blow it off because I'm doin' ok?

    Just sayin'.

By the same token, should I not be a bit concerned when a hack like Nancy Pelosi makes such grossly idiotic statements such as "food stamps and welfare handouts are good for stimulating the economy" - paraphrased.

Are most people just comfortably numb?

I guess it depends on whether you're referring to a specific 28 year-old, or a hypothetical "generic" or "typical" one.

If the latter, yes, "blow it off".. if the former, then maybe provide assistance to the degree and extent that you "care" about that person?

I already stretch to provide that help, Baley. How far would you recommend stretching? And how many people do you recommend stretching out for?

Keep in mind that 50% of your income (and mine) is already commandeered to "help" politicians with their spending "habit".

That's a tough one. My own strategy is to pay attention and "care" what such people say, but not to internalize it to the point that it affects my blood pressure

Yeah, I know. It's a moot point, really.
