    Mushy strike on a 40-S DDO/DDR.

Bands have nothing to do with grade. This coin looks to be low MS.

  • Super nice pic! I was able to see the split in the date and reverse E without knowing the variety.

The photo is a PCGS image of my coin. I used the quarterly special while grading my last batch.

Don't have much experience with the series, but I would guess MS65.
  • Is that a die clash at the lower part of the ax head?

Hmmmm, looks a bit better than '58....oh well, nice Merc..Cheers, RickO
  • Do you feel the grade is from the mushy strike and the scratch on the obverse? what do you feel held the coin back from a higher grade as the PCGS image shows nicer than the grade?

I am wondering why you sent it in? Even if it goes 64, it is a 15 dollar coin. Certainly would not have a chance at FB. But even if it did, it is only worth $25.

I think they did a good job at photography. The grade came in as shown in my notes before sending it in. AU58 is an accurate grade for this dime.

PCGS Price guide for the 1940-S DDO/DDR FS-901 says $115.00; however in the real world of varieties it is about a $300-$350 range coin. I sold the other 1940-S I had, so I needed another one to go into my set.

I know some people don't follow or care about the varieties. This is a tough coin in any grade.

Whoops, I missed the variety part. I hope your dime varieties are holding up better price wise than the Morgan Vams, which are official dead.
