Between the tooling and recoloring, I agree. Might this have been a practice coin? It is not the work of a skilled coin doc---just a glance at this piece is enough to set off alarm bells.

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

The seller answered a question and says it came with a card marked "Design Engraved,(Study Piece)".
Then he tries to pass it off as a possible pattern.

I like the looks of this one- reminds me of an engraved hobo nickel or potty dollar. Honestly, I think it's worth the selling price for the artistic merits alone.
<< <i>Are you sure it isn't a straight-up counterfeit? It would be easier to strike something like that from dies than to hand-engrave it. >>
That is my thought. The entire style of the Indian Head bust has subtle differences from the original artwork that makes it look like it was done by a different hand.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
My gut feeling is genuine, messed with. There were a few coin doctors back in the 60's and 70's who did this kind of stuff.

Someone probably thought they got a deal for $310.....at least until they submit it, or show it to someone who knows coins.

This item could be a Trial Piece such as: J787 Copper- P.E. (A-W 1073)
The seller might have at least one neg FB after this auction.....
The engraver was a real slacker not to have done the reverse too.
