Can reproduction or counterfeit coins be sold via the buy sell forum if the coins in question are identified as reproductions?

They cannot on eBay unless they are marked "COPY". The BST would be a good route.

They should be prohibited. They are a cancer on collecting.

Cannot be sold if it evolves mailing in the US mail according to the hobby protection act if not marked as a COPY. Is the way I understand the law.

I disagree with that blanket statement. Modern replicas being made and sold as genuine pieces are certainly terrible for the hobby. However, contemporary counterfeit pieces made to circulate as genuine coins are a neat part of history and numismatics.

There was a time when I would have agreed with your statement, but not now. The rise of counterfeit coins in the past 15 years threatens the future of the hobby. It is time for collectors to adopt a personal policy that they will not buy, sell or trade in such material.

I agree, the counterfeits are becoming a real bane on the hobby. At one time, they were a good teaching tool, but now they are causing financial pain to new collectors especially. A few, such as the Henning nickels, are deemed collectible. Overall, they are an abomination. Cheers, RickO

according to: link the law is very clear, if you described them as counterfeits, there would be no "intent to defraud" so ... going by the letter of the law, no law is broken if you don't attempt to defraud anyone. interesting reading, and clear enough that anyone should be able to understand it, there are those that may not agree with it, but the law is the law

  • The Collectible Coin Protection Act added additional provisions to the Hobby Protection Act which requires that any and all replicas and counterfeits must be marked COPY (to FTC specifications) before they are sold (intent to defraud or not). Before December of last year, the copy marking requirements merely applied to manufacturers or importers, not sellers. That changed. :-)

Since no one has actually prepared a document that has the full Act and all other pertinent documents as amended, I've gone ahead and put a copy together here: http://fakes.numismetrica.com/collectible-coin-protection-act/.

    Hope it helps.
