You might be in for a shock if you were to see what an early half dime looks like in VG. These coins were small, thin and rather fragile. Many of the low grade ones are bent which resulted in uneven wear. This 1796 half dime is graded VG-8. It is the 1796 over 5 variety which makes it a very scarce coin.

NGC graded this one EF-40. I had no trouble getting the full Gray Sheet EF-40 price when I traded it in on a upgrade a few years ago.

Honestly I think calling it 5 Cents makes more sense than calling it Half of 10 cents (H10C), which is what the major TPG do. But in the end, it just doesn't matter what they call it, it is still a Half Dime.

Call them what you will, 5C, 5¢, or half dime, or even half disme, they are beautiful. Notice that the Mint didn't even put a denomination on Bill Jones' 1796 half dime, yet everyone knew what to call it. It is always a pleasure to look at Bill Jones' coins .... even if he did call the Patriot's Super Bowl win wrong last night. image

Yes, the mint did not put any marking on the half dime as what its face value was until 1829 when the mint resumed making them. At that time "5 C." was adder to the reverse. There is a gap in the series from 1806 until 1829.

Well it is 5 cents. The difference comes in when there's discussion of half dimes vs. nickels. But in the end both are 5¢.

I also feel that in various guides half dimes should not be lumped in with dimes. They're certainly not dimes and not even the same denomination. Disrespect I tell you! image

ANACS uses 5c for Half Dimes and I trust them, so yes. Looks f15/vf20.

I viewed the coin as a Choice VF-30 or 35 and bought it as such. NGC graded it EF-40. There is $2,800 difference between VF and EF, or to put it another way the price more than doubles between VF and EF. So yea, I was happy to get EF money in trade.
