A "bad" 1878-s quarter

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭
1878-s is one Seated quarter that has frequently been counterfeited over the years. It used to be (incorrectly) assumed to be the toughest Seated quarter. However, it is no 1878-s half dollar, and prices have adjusted. But that left a lot of older counterfeits kicking around in the marketplace. This particular example has a mintmark style that doesn't exist. It's a totally counterfeit coin, whereas many of these have added mintmarks. Report it if you care to.

Reported. As if eBay GAF though. Eventually smoebody will end up having to make a SNAD claim or at least an eBay Buyer Protection claim, if they have any IQ at all.

I believe these listings should be allowed to play out, anyone that is bidding should be aware of what they are buying, from the picture it is an obvious fake. yet people still bid with their hands and think with their ---holes

The 78-s quarter was the most overrated coin in Coin World Trends back in 1974. Imagine it being $100 in Good and $500 in XF!....priced 20% less than a 49-0 in those grades. That was more than every seated quarter in the series except the 1870cc to 1873-cc. It was priced higher than the 42-0 sd, 49-0, 52-0, 60-s, 64-s, 72-s, etc. I

With a mintage of 140,000 it exceeded plenty of the pre-1873 era seated quarters. You have to wonder how dumb people could have been not to realize that this coin was only in the top 30-60% of all seated quarters. When I did my surveys in the mid-1970's it showed up twice as often as the 1848. The 1878-s was about on par with the 54-0, 55-0 and 91-0....which were also generally overrated at that time. With the passing of time these coins are probably fairly tough in problem free VF-XF grades...but they are readily available in lower grades and/or with problems.

Once upon a time, an eBay member could bid on an item, and then retract the bid with an unrestricted option to state the reason for the retraction which would make it possible to expose a seller of counterfeits. Now the reasons available for making a retraction are on a short pre-designated menu that does not include the above.

the 1878-s is no joke, ive owned maybe three in the last 8 or 10 years, cant remember the last time a real one was listed on the bay, probably one of the ones I sold, when my interest in seated quarters began, there was no internet, one had no choice but to learn scarcity for him/herself. now with the computer age, one can get a true reflection of just how scarce some dates truly are.... and how common others are. in a post I read (today I believe it was) someone's rule of thumb is to "never ever pay retail" I chuckled when I read that, hell, its a treat to find a scarce date seated quarter priced at the (published) retail level

    Economy Shipping from outside US

The item is located in Jeannette, Pa. but it is shipped from outside the US (i.e. China)

Some paid $999.00 for this fake 1893-S Morgan

You cannot police every coin on ebay. There are other fakes he has sold if you look at his completed listings. More and more of this crap keeps happening. Ebay needs to stop China from selling coins altogether as the likelyhood of getting a genuine rare coin from China is almost 0%.

Their system should not allow this to be said.

    Watch out for eBay coins.

Is it my imagination or do the stars on that coin look unbalanced (some of them look like the centers are too high / too low).

Otherwise, the coin looks convincing, it is the "out of whack" stars that got my attention.
