One of my friends brought this Worst U.S. Gold Type Set to Long Beach today. Check these coins out!!!

Rumor has it, it was put together by a dealer/collector in Florida over many years.

At one point that was all it was worth. Seems $88.50 is the amount of face value in the set, if I am identifying all the denominations correctly.

Thanks for sharing. I like lowball gold. It takes a lot more guts to have a $20 gold pocket piece than a Morgan or something. Though presumably the gold wears relatively quickly.

Really great conversation piece. I like how it includes the classic quarter and half eagles, and the type 2 dollar and $3.

Neat custom case, I do find the order of the spaces slightly odd but not altogether unreasonable.

Time to send the set off to PCGS for grading. PCGS has a Low Ball Gold Type Registry set category. There are already eleven members with such sets showing.

I sure wish I had taken pix of my "shaggy dog" type set in the Dansco.

Album FULL.
Priority given to counterfeits and corrosion that was growing like stalagmites.
The Kennedy half was a scrap from a "cutout."

One of the half dimes musta bin "chawed" by a horse or something. All chomped up.

One seated dollar was 1859S with hole plugged with lead.
The Walker AND the Frankie were phonies.

Counterfeit Franklins MUST be scarce.

When I sold it on CoinNet, it sold FAST!

Was fun building it.

This set is about the neatest collection that has been on these boards for awhile. The problem with having them graded is that a lot of them could not be graded because you can't see the date or the MM. This collector sure knew when to find them and saved them from the melting pot.

I would love to know the weight of that Saint, just to see how much weight was lost. I weighed out a batch of slick Morgans once and the lot averaged 7% light.

With no date, it can't qualify for a PCGS low ball PO-1 grade.
