The Wells Fargo History Museum in San Francisco was closed for a while for a remodeling and has reopened.

It is a small museum located in the downtown financial and banking district of San Francisco.

I visited there recently and looked at the exhibits, which included some coins from pioneer days,
stagecoaches, gold weights, and an exhibit of books and comic books which featured stories
about Wells Fargo.

Some of the gold coins are real and some are labeled replicas.

This morning some thieves drove a truck into the museum in a robbery attempt.

I would guess they concentrated on the gold coins.....however, I have never been to the museum, so not sure what other valuables are there. Cheers, RickO

I see some gold nuggets in the picture, that could also be a target. I am thinking they left the currency, as that would have a known serial number, and would be traceable. I hope they catch the jerks.

The robbers crashed a car or other vehicle through the front doors to gain entry. Here they are boarding up the damaged front door area. Note the tire marks. Note also the bowed out shatterproof glass on the right.

I wonder how many years it has been since Wells Fargo had its last gold heist.

Local news reported that mostly gold nuggets were stolen in the ram-raid. Other stuff on display were apparently untouched.

The museum located at 400 Montgomery St. is the official corporate headquarter address for Wells Fargo & Co. The attached bank branch facing California St. is Wells Fargo store #1 according to the receipt.

  • I hope their surveillance cameras got as many details as they could on this crime. Hopefully they will get them.

It is not as nice as the Old SF Mint was back in the 1970s, but still well worth a visit. I am afraid there will never be anything like the gold exhibit at the mint during that time ever again. Insurance, etc will make that impossible.

A ballsy 'smash and grab', but, as the article alluded, they really should have done their homework, Obviously they really didn't case the joint. Eh, they got what they deserved (scrimplings, compared to what kind of swag they REALLY could have swiped), and they'll get what they deserve, when they get nabbed (drove a truck into the building? there's a solid trail, they'll get nabbed inside a month)....candidates for 'Americas Dumbest Criminals'.
    I'll come up with something.

I wonder about this happening at coin shows. If you think about what is on the bourse floor even at a small show it could be worth it to some desperate people to go in and to a violent takeover kind of thing.

I don't mean to make light of the crime, but it is a bit ironic that a big part of the display was about gold and silver robberies in the 19th century and actions Wells Fargo took to combat them.
