(Sorry, folks, but I believe it's too soon to have another "STORM of the Century" so soon after Hurricane Sandy)

..... post your favorite coin from 1888, in honor of the previous "Great Blizzard" that hit the NE U.S. !

I thought the media called something else the storm of the century a few years ago?
Oh well, it's 55 degrees outside where I live.

I don't have any 1888 coins, the closest is this 1884 nickel

They're predicting 1-2 inches, or 1-2 inches have already fallen?

7.5 inches in Plymouth, Mass. as of 2:30 a.m. Eastern.

It's actually tapering off now, here where 2+ was predicted. At most there's 6".

So let's change this from honoring the "Blizzard of the Century" to honoring our meteorologists and post an error coin.

Here in Southeast CT, I estimate 18 inches of snow on the ground with at least 10 hours to go, judging by the doppler. I don't know where to begin?
Did a basic shoveling at 3:30 am, doesn't look like I did a thing. I do have a 12 pack of Coors Light, for later image

In southern NH, it's a white out winter wonderland. I suspect outside my house I have about 12-14 inches (hard to tell because of the wind), but will will snow until tonight.

Probably will have 2 feet in the drive before it's all said and done...

I live in the northwest suburbs of Boston. The snow is really deep, comfortably over 2 feet already.

Not much snow here in the Catskills... but they did say that depending on the track, it could be a couple inches to eighteen inches....and the storm track moved east. When forecasting a coastal storm, it is difficult to predict an accurate track...that is why there are so many different possibilities shown by computer models. Cheers, RickO

there is 26' of snow in much of eastern Massachusetts - seems they got it pretty right to me .. maybe NYC and western Mass was a dud but meterology was never and will never be an exact science as Rick O stated .. If you don't like their forecast models, listen to your big toe image

I have to say though, it seems like they were much more accurate back when I was a kid in the 60's when they had far, far less technology. If they say 6 to 10" of snow, that's what you got. Go figure....

Here in the other Washington we recorded a record high temp of 61 yesterday. Also the news was bemoaning the lack of snow in the mountain ski areas.

I'm looking at snow rifts over three feet closer to four with much more snow scheduled to fall here, just outside of Boston. Home of your World Champions of the NFL, the New England Patriots. Opps, did I just say that image

Love snow - as a kid made lots of money shoveling/blowing drives for the neighbors. We had a good size snow blower and sometimes it was too deep for it - had to cut into it by layers.

Nothing like a free day off playing in snow, but hated the makeup school days in the spring.

This error on coins guy is one of a kind .. every beckoned moment defending ebay and bragging about his sales and now talking about kayaking on the Pacific .. whatever floats your boat no pun intended .. Hey you could walk to Tijuana too if you wanted to ..... Some of us may have NO desire to kayak on the Pacific (or live through earthquakes) and may actually prefer a climate of four seasons .. Don't have one to post......but I just laugh at those in the east that get excited over 2 or 3 feet of snow with
blowing winds. How can they not be prepared? Does the world come to a stop if they can't get to work for
    a day or two????
I don't remember it but my Grandparents told me of the winter of 1916 in Carson City. 20 feet on the level
and the world did not end. The kids (my grandparents) had great fun going from house to house in the tunnels.
People had to cut their way out of the houses through the roofs....Life went on even though the snow stayed
    on the ground till June...
I've been through many blizzards and snowfalls that were 4 feet and more and had drifts as high as the second
story when I lived in Colorado...I owned a hardware store and had to get there to get it open. Missed work all
of half a day one year....Snow was a yearly occurrence (is it different in the east?).
Perhaps the news just hypes it to the end....
Anyone here on the boards from an affected area? Any problems?

ya AU/AG .. I agree .... Reminds me of the stories my father used to tell me about he walked uphill BOTH ways, to and from school - 8 miles one way with papers in his shoes ... The USA is a weaker minded place for sure these days .. it is all cultural mindset .. No mental toughness - everyone gets a trophy mentality ....

So...........you want me to post a "Monster" coin that really isn't that much of a Monster?

Don't have any as mine are all the real deal.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Forecast said we were outside of the 24-30 inch area. Now, it seems we are 30 inch plus and still falling.
The cars across the street were completely buried with 4 feet of snow on their roofs. This must have been drifting snow from the house roof.

Jeeez, and here I thought the opening post asked for pix of coins dated 1888. Silly me, I guess I should have known to spew out verbiage about how forecasters can't forecast. With all due respect, I'm sure the forecasters showed various models to the media, and the media started spouting about the worst case scenario, at which point the politicians reacted. In any case, it does appear that there are parts of the NE that have gotten dumped with a lot of snow.

And now, back to the original aspect of this thread, here's a coin...

I don't have any half dimes dated 1888, since the half dime was discontinued in 1873. The latest date that I have is an 1874-O image , but that is a story for another time.

Here in the frozen tundra of Maine we have about 25+" inches of snow so far, but the storm is scheduled to continue for another 12 -15 hours. The storm took a path about 50 miles East of where it was predicted to go, running around the city of New York, and heading for Long Island, Cape Cod, and then directly into the coast of Maine. We just might top that 16 feet of snow in Colorado back in 1916. The governor has declared a state of emergency, but that is just a euphemism for "Summer is finally over, and it is time to take out the window air conditioners". If this gets any worse, they will likely close some of the beaches. Summers are known to be quite short here in Maine. Last year it was on a Tuesday if I recall. This cold weather does make it easier to catch lobstuhs, though. You just walk out onto the frozen ocean, cut a hole in the ice, reach in, and grab 'em. Ayuh.

I'm not old enough to remember the blizzard of 1888, but I DO remember the blizzard of 78.

Here in eastern MA where I am we have about 30" and it's still coming down.

    Cheers,

    Bob

I read somewhere that shutting down NYC for 24 hrs cost an estimated $200 million!! Yikes!

I just love the fact that news & weather stations brag all year long about how they have the best "ultra-mega-double-Doppler" weather forecasting systems and to "trust and turn to them first" for all weather info............... and then issue some lame "don't-blame-me-for-a-lousy-forecast" excuse afterwards....

Reminds me of when a news station reports a story as an "exclusive".... usually means it's too worthless for other stations to waste their time on reporting............

Oh, well...... keep those pics of 1888 coins (all 1 of them!) coming!! imageimage
  • There is a subsequent post which is not showing. I hope this pulls it in.

The big storm only left about two inches here... and moved on...however, yesterday it snowed again (Juno, the big storm, was dumping on Boston), and this time we got five inches.... amazing.. Cheers, RickO
