Home U.S. Coin Forum

Have your online coin sales increased over the last 5 years?

Question is for anyone who sells coins for a profit (or attempted profit).

Collectors are welcome to participate as well.

Online includes Ebay, websites, Amazon, BST etc.

For the discussion, please consider only sales that you create as opposed to third party auction houses.

I've been selling more on eBay and yes not as a collector, but with the intent to make a profit.
That way I can deduct expenses on Schedule C - and perhaps reduce my taxes.

Yes, my company's online sales have increased. But so have sales at shows, wholesale sales, private sales, and just about any other kind of sales you can think of.

My sales are WAY down over the last 5 years but it is of my doing and not the economy. I am not putting much time or energy into selling coins now.

Well, sure! We launched our website in 2008 if I recall correctly, but gave up on eBay years ago with the occasional exception. The two events are not coincidental.

Absolutely as I have done fewer shows. I work full time as site financial manager so online operation salvages my weekends. As a UH football fan (got my MBA there), football Saturdays can hold priority.

I do miss the excitement of shows and everything I enjoy about setting up. But with a move up and lots of business travel (SAP implementation project in Florida) I will sometimes attend an out of town show if not just to walk the bourse and buy when synergy presents itself. I do try to set up at some of the major shows or local ones.

Boy I can sure speak for Ian above, I watch his stuff every week. He is kickin as , getting a lot of good quality consignments.

My ebay sales are good when I get the stuff, my problem is this area sucks for stuff coming in. If I have to go out and pay up for the nicer coins at show from other dealers, its tough to make a profit on ebay with fee structure.

Last year was one of my best years over all; however, since Labor Day sales have died. Looking at the numbers, I did 80% of my sales in dollar terms before Labor Day even though I maintained a presence at shows and online. Online sales volume has mirrored show sales. Given feepay and paypal rules and fees, it is no longer appropriate to sell high dollar items there - if the potential actually exists. As the pearl of wisdom goes, don't list anything there that you can't afford to have stolen. I will say that my FUN show sales were off nearly 90% from last year. While it's undeniable that there was ample foot traffic, that same foot traffic was bulking at prices as much as 25% or more below what I successfully sell the same items for online.

  • Yes, YOY increase in sales and traffic on Ebay. 2014 was great on Ebay, and January so far is beating last year.

I believe the economy has truly turned around and is in a big upswing.

Both my businesses have become much busier lately.

Every time I try to when an auction in the last couple months I have missed it and the item went much higher than expected.

Every coin I sell at auction has been bid up more than I expected.
