Chicago as a coin town?

Hi folks,

I am considering a move to Chicago and was just curious to how the city is as a coin town. As far as I understand, there is no sales tax on coins in Chicago (which would be a nice plus). I have heard some horror stories about the Post Offices in Chicago losing large numbers of packages so that would be a concern for internet buying - Anyone from Chicago have any experience one way or the other? I know Harlan J Berk is in Chicago - Are there any other major dealers in the area? It seems some of the major coin shows occasionally pass through the area, so that would be nice also.

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

No sales tax on coins in Illinois. CSNS show is in Schaumburg (NW suburb) every April, CICF is in Rosemont in April, and ANA is in Rosemont (by O'Hare) this year. Illinois Numismatic Society shows are twice a year in Tinley Park (far south suburb). There are no shows actually in Chicago, as it's too expensive. In fact, the village of Rosemont exists primarily as a swath of "technically not Chicago" land between O'Hare and the rest of Chicago for the purpose of attracting conventions. I haven't experienced lost packages out where I am, which isn't in the city, but stuff I get is sorted through Chicago.

I can't advise regarding B&M shops, as I don't frequent any. Many of the names and numbers cited above are appointment only dealers or people with no shop.

    Great coin town.

When I was there, the official story as to why no major coin shows within city limits was because the first McCormick Place convention center was destroyed by a fire started by an exhibitor's (not a coin show) extension cord. Therefore, no coin show lights allowed. Exhibitors at trade shows that want to have anything electrical must pay a convention center worker to come over and plug in or unplug ANYTHING.

Yes, I live in Chi-town and there are a LOT of coin shops. Now we're only talking Chicago. There just as many near Chicago in the suburbs. As pointed out earlier in a post before mine. Good luck finding a decent one though. I love my coin dealer, at La Grange coins in La Grange Il. Just outside the Chicago area. Joe Ridzy is the owner. Very fair and the main thing , HONEST! Give him a call. Tell him joeykoin sent ya'.

I think people don't realize how big Chicago is. There are a lot of coin shops. I live in Indiana where coin collecting is pretty weak in general.
    I have plans....sometimes

I was just going to say Chicago is one of the best coin towns of all but if you want to
go to a coin show figure on driving to Milwaukee or Indianapolis. A few of the suburban
    shows are OK, though. image

The list of shops above is far from complete.

I live in the area and Chicago really is a great coin town, almost to the point of saturation. Along with plenty of coin shops in the surrounding area, most of which are ok--good, there is a coin show just about every Sunday along with 1 or 2 local auctions a month. It's nice on one hand as there's plenty to look through and plenty of opportunities to socialize with fellow collectors and dealers. The drawback, as far as the smaller weekly shows/auctions, is that you see the same stuff, same dealers, etc. I guess compared to many areas it's a nice problem to have, it just gets a little monotonous looking through inventory.

If you're thinking about moving here, you may consider NW Indiana. Illinois is a financial mess, Crook County is just that, taxes are very high and will probably go up even still. Just some friendly advice from a life long collector who is ' Illinoyed'

The alleged cold weather in Chicago is merely an optical illusion caused by the lack of heat!

Use caution dealing with some SouthWest Suburban dealers.. 1 dealer had a buy price $ 50 under spot for 1 oz American Gold Eagles... others offering way under Greysheet bid for Nice coins .. another dealer saying he was the highest paid buyer for Vintage watches, offered 15 % of worth for a working ,mint condition Rolex.
Best to find out yourself .. many dealers outside Chicago city limits...... never been to LaGrange coins

My Chicago business mails packages every day (not coins), sometimes 50+ packages in one day, and have almost never had a package get lost by the post office. Maybe one in 500 or one in 1,000 gets lost. They're surprisingly good. Now, on the other hand, if you're sending a package with coins jingling inside... that might be a different story image

They'll confiscate your car in Chicago even if you have a valid carry permit if
you get caught with a weapon. They have amended the laws recently and even
    issue a few carry permits.

Very few muggers get your car, too.
