Guess the Grade: A 1980 Topps Johnny Bench Triptych *Grades Revealed*

I was sorting through the 1978 OPC baseball cards I'd had graded over the years earlier tonight, and came across this trio of graded Jose Cruz cards, all three of which are different grades. Anyone want to take a crack at grading them, left to right? Jose Cruz was a very underrated player in his day and always seemed to hit well vs the Mets.

9 - 10 - 7? The left and middle are very nice and I have seen worse looking 10's out there if those two you own aren't 10's..nice cards Tim.

I suck at grading, but I'll guess left to right 10, 8, 7.

Jose Cruz was one of my favorite Astros back in the day. My dad would take me to an Astros game every now and then along with more Rangers games. Cruz was my 2nd favorite Astro behind Terry Puhl. JR Richard was my favorite Astros hurler. Good times.

The 1st 2 have the same cut. They most likely came from the same box/case.
    I will say 9,9,8

Seems like a lot of people are missing the 'all three of which are different grades' comment. If I were the submitter, those would come back 8, 7, 6, though I hope the slabs say better.

Why does every thread have the same 3 or 4 responses from the same person? Once is enough I get it lol. I'm sure it's a problem with the site, but phewwwwww.

Also, Tom was correct in that the first two came from the same (BBCE) box!

I broke that box down a few years ago back when a 78 OPC box was less than $300!

Got a few 10s and a healthy number of 9s~it was a beautiful box. I still have one more from that same case but they are too costly to rip now, LOL!

I pulled a dead centered mint Murray RC from that box also but it is a shade too narrow and has minsizereq'd the couple times I sent it in..

Those first two are great looking cards, congrats!

But am I alone in thinking the one on the right was really lucky to get a generous grade of an 8 considering the tilt?

"But am I alone in thinking the one on the right was really lucky to get a generous grade of an 8 considering the tilt?"

From reading past posts it seems the tilt does not affect the grade as long as the centering meets the standard. As for the one on the right it must come in just
    within the 8 standard.

Edited to add: my guess was a 7 on the one on the right simply because I have a few 1970 Topps baseball PSA 7's that look similar.

No, you aren't alone, and I'm not trying to downplay Tim's cards, but I never would have thought that was an 8. I was curious of when it was graded as I've heard in the past from different members that at one time, PSA grading was less stringent. It's tilted and almost miscut on the bottom left border, but I love OPC and I think it gives the card charactor image PSA 8 though? A little generous, but I've seen worse.

I would say that the 8 is not high end for the grade but it is definitely within the parameters for the grade. As dennis said, PSA does not downgrade for tilt though that is what many collectors focus on when viewing cards. These were all graded within last few years. The 8 also suffers visually by comparison from being positoned next to the 10, lol.

  • For the love of all things holy, that 8 is hideous.

I wish they'd graded instead of N6'd my dead centered 78 OPC Murray from the pack instead of the Bench, LOL!

Absolutely! Nice cards, I have to think on this one a little bit. If I were to sub these, what would they be? As was stated, the middle looks minsizereq, but it's in a slab so.

    8 - 9 - 10

The left is off center right left to right with bottom edge chipping. Suprised if it's a 9.

The middle although short, is otherwise nice except for top to bottom centering.

The right is off center a tad left to right, but otherwise Gem unless I'm missing something. If that was offered as a 10 on Feebay, I'd buy it without hesitation. Nice cards.

It's interesting you raise that point, raulmaster~for me, the registration and color on the 10 look much better than on either of the other two~registration and surfaces are often discounted in favor of the more apparent centering and corners/edges, but in my experience, that is usually the difference between a 9 and a 10, or a card that looks like a 10 at first blush, and then grades a point or two lower.
