Another Coin from the 7070 - 20 Center - What are your thoughts on grade?

Acquired in the late 1980's at a small Sunday coin show, and photographed by Todd at FUN.
While searching for a 20 center, I decided to look for the 1875P. It's mintage was far lower than the 75S, and yet priced about the same
back then. This coin was marked at VF, which by grading standards back then was probably correct. It has somewhat mirrored PL fields (which
I've since noticed a number of '75P's display). At the time, it had just a trace of pink and gold one near the rims, and I had to stretch to pay
the whopping price of $120 for it. It has darkened considerably in the album over the years - maybe too dark? The luster has definitely
become more muted, though there is more on the obverse than the photo shows.

In my unprofessional opinion I grade it XF40 based on the pic and the luster you describe.
I'll bet it would sit and behave for an awesome Trueview.
Also, probably good to free it from the 7070 and get it in an airtite or slab to stop it from darkening.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Edit to add on a bad day it might 45 due to the darker toning.
<< <i>It has a real nice look to it.
+1

I would grade the coin AU-50, maybe AU-53, based on the images.
It's the more common of the two die marriages for 1875-P (here).
And it's not too dark at all!

<< <i>It was way undergraded even back when. I grade it AU53 or maybe even 55. Anyone who has a 20 cent piece with a full stuck liberty like that for sale as a vf please sell it to me now! Remember that, unlike other seated liberty coins the word "liberty" is raised and wore down quickly. >>
And often the coins were weakly struck (especially 1875-CC) where an AU coin may not even have a "full" LIBERTY.

Might even go nuts and pay XF price. Sheeze! 35 indeed!
I was thinking lock XF, shot 45. All the AU estimates makes me quite pleased!
<< <i>Nice coin ... and that was undergraded "back in the day." Even then, it had enough detail for an EF. Recall that so many people graded circulated double dime on the letters in LIBERTY back then. Many coins were undergraded.

For sure. XF even back in the 1970's. XF45 is the lowest grade I could see it getting. AUish is quite possible if there's >10-15% luster remaining...even if muted. It has enough detail for AU. I like the toning. It's definitely not too dark. You grade a coin like this based on the strongest details (wing feathers and lower half of Miss Liberty) plus the luster. If we graded original bags of "O" mint Morgan dollars on strike alone nearly all of them would be AU's.

and that's on eye appeal alone.
<< <i>I grade it about $400 >>
Awesome! ... I'll buy ones like this all day long for $400 each! How many do you have to sell?
