1917 SLQ i thought might be proof

i know-i know....1917 proof...yeah right
coinfacts does make reference
so with the 1916 bare breasted public out cry...1917 probably was pretty crazy at the mint
producing type 1's being stopped then type 2's for correction and public appeasement
so surely many die changes meant...fresh dies of new design changes
i've made reference to 2 types of 1917 type 1's that can be readily observed
so my example
when looking for a 1917 type 1...i was after full strike and full squared rims and pebbled/satin or matte type finish
i stumbled on this ngc ms64fh
it met everything i was after but had a unique image charactor on northeastcoin
it looked like lettering was raised on the bottom of the shield...this caused my meek lil gears in my crazy head to spin
on this image...use a glass to your monitor as i did...something looked there...like letters

so i cracked this and sent it in raw for truview...this example held it's ground on grade and just posted at ms64fh
but i wanted to be up close and personal with that truview...sadly...there is nothing about lettering on the bottom of the shield...madness in the end
truview here

in closing
i did end up with what i was after though
full strike-beyond just full head example....those vertical and horizontal lines of the badge which sits on the front of the shield too
but this
sharp, square, thick and flat rims with full surface completely pebbled like that of a matte....referred to as satin
rims that baffle me.....as they look like they would of "CUT anyone" who handled this for commerce
image below here is a crop of max truview to display that

in the end
this is my 1917 type 1 core collection keeper
enjoy if ya do

<< <i>The beast looks smashed in the NGC image, but is full in the PCGS images. There are numerous nicks on the right leg (NGC) which are not present on the PCGS.

Beautiful coin! >>
same coin...no problem there
this displays how imaging techniques can skew a coins view
<< <i>...that coin is hammered! >>
Indeed. That strike is amazing.
And the TruView photo is phenomenal.
<< <i>Full head and full shield. Sweet coin. >>
yes indeed, that looks pretty darned good
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
<< <i>Maybe the graininess is from a light rust on the dies. >>
Many of the early walkers and SLQ's show this matte-like surface finish.

That matte-like finish is very impressive on SLQs

i tend to believe this is the product of "intentional final surface prep of dies" as it's a very uniform
surely it was a lil final kiss to show off the mint workers pride and joy of these new designs....after the barber series ended
it wouldn't of taken too much effort at all....to of lightly beadblasted dies before going into service
strange as some aren't though
david hall even references such on coinfacts...that some are satin finish or brillant luster
i still hold reserve that these "satin or matte" finished examples get dinked a lil on grade
as most lofty grades.....are luster/frost based grades...once a coin hits a certain grade...it lofts depending on frost and luster
these examples don't bear that at all...nor do they display much in flow lines either
maybe these could of been test or very first examples off a die when the coiner was setting up a press
slower speed while getting the height or pressure right so he could get approval to run at full speed
i'm still waiting to get rodgers book on the renaissance of american coinage
to read and peer in on explanation of these differences

Well worth the price. Lots of great info therein.
Super coin for sure !!!!!

<< <i>That is an awesome SLQ...Congratulations...Cheers, RickO >>
i was thinking of you ricko when i cracked it out of that ngc holder
to give it a very mild dip n rinse so it would be all white and sparkly with no tarnish or environmental coin damaging stuff
but i got scared...very scared
so i just left what little tarnish was on...on
