Home Metal Detecting

Any experience with any of the super lightweight detectors on the market today?

AUandAGAUandAG Posts: 24,762 ✭✭✭✭✭
Can't swing my old Whites VSAT any longer so gave it to the kids. Now looking I see that many are being
made that are in the 2.5 pound class. Anyone have any experience with a lightweight? Or can make any
recommendations? I nugget shoot for the most part and do not hunt parks. Do hunt old ghost towns and
mining camps and need one that will truly take out the iron (so many rusted nails, screws, etc).

Any such critter?

thanks,

I use a Tesoro Cibola, and it's feather-light, works well. It looks like a good Tesoro detector for nuggets is the Vaquero:

The Tesoro is nice...but you might call White's customer service and discuss your needs with a technician...they are very helpful...Cheers, RickO

Okay, now while looking I see that they vary by frequency as well. So, can anyone tell me the difference
    between 4khz, 8khz, 10, 12 and 14khz?

Dang these are getting so complicated....got to make a smart choice here.

I have no experience with it; however, I am very intrigued by the Deus XP.

I too have looked at that super lightweight unit. Remote sold separately does not make sense to me
as it would defeat the purpose of the unit. Interesting for sure.

thanks ricko, but have already done that and Whites has nothing even remotely as light as 2.5 pounds. I loved my Whites VSat but Whites is ruled out.

I think that I have decided to go for the Tesoro Lobo. The wand and brains can be separated so
that the brains are on your hip (comes with the belt attachment built in). Makes the wand and
coil only a pound plus...super easy to swing.
It's got the descrim I will need for the heavy mineralization here in the desert.

I think I'll be saving nickels to pick up one soon...

    Thanks for all the imput

I have an old Tesoro Bandido, works fine for coins and stuff but I've never looked for nuggets.
It might not be high end but the regular 9V battery lasts very long in it and it's simple and pretty light and finds coins and discriminates.
I plug in a tiny earplug instead of the speaker and that seems to increase the battery life and I find that people bug me less if they can't hear you when you're detecting.

Picked up my Tesoro Lobo today...I paid $554 in cash and 5 Peace dollars. Love it when a bit of a trade
    happens!
Extremely lightweight with the brains on the belt.
Will let you all know what it's like in the field....don't know when as of yet....

    Stay tuned.

One of my fellow hunters in England had a XP Deus. It was indeed feather light. ALL of my fellow hunters were actually using the Minelab CTX 3030, but this guy had the XP Deus as his backup.

I picked it up but did not use it. Thought it was pretty neat, but can't give much useful info about it.
