MY FRIDAY FUN SHOW REPORT

For me, I was able to accomplish all of my goals at the show so that makes it a success. The drive getting there was UNEVENTFUL which was nice.
I did not have to deal with too much rush hour traffic so it only took about 1hr 45min and I got there about 10:00AM, just as the West Parking lot was FULL.
No big deal so I parked far away in the south parking lot and took a Pedi-Cab to the entrance. Instead of a 25min walk it was a 5min ride.
Close to the entrance I saw MFH, DIMEMAN and 1tommy. It was my first time meeting 1tommy and he seemed very nice.
It's always good matching up faces to forum names. I didn't socialize for long as I wanted to get a lot done in a short amount of time.
My first priority was to show my 1897 10c RPD to a few people. I took it over to CONECA. They looked at it under a microscope and I also showed
them the photos(I had them saved on my iPhone) I had taken of the coin. They were complimentary of my photography which was nice and then
they referred me over to visit with Chris Pilliod who was just on the next aisle. I had the same basic conversation with Chris and he took an interest in it.
He said he did not recall ever seeing this RPD, which I thought was good. While I was with him, I emailed the photos to him.
He is going to compare my photos to everything he has on file when he gets back. If he comes to the conclusion that this is a new discovery,
I will be listed as the discoverer and then they will get the info up on the CONECA website...speaking of their website, I was told that CONECA has a
gentleman that is working on a new website for them which should involve many updates. That's very good news. I showed the coin to a few dealers that
seemed to have Barbers and I also showed it to ANACS because I have seen their holders where they list a coin as a "DISCOVERY PIECE"...or whatever.
I don't think PCGS does this although I will call them to confirm just in case something has changed. ANACS told me that if I get a letter from CONECA
listing this coin as the discovery piece and then provide a copy of that letter and the coin to them then they will slab it and note the DISCOVERY PIECE
on the label which I think is pretty cool. So anyway, that is just a fun side project for me at this time. I'm happy to have made those contacts and have that ball rolling.

Shortly thereafter it was time to make my way to the PCGS luncheon. They gave out a Florida Everglades quarter with Fun Show Luncheon labeled holder. I really
liked that because I have spent a lot of time in the Florida Everglades for nature photography. On one side of label there is a blue water scene with
Double-crested Cormorant (wings stretched out drying) and it says PCGS Luncheon January 9. 2015. On the back side of the label it says Limited Edition of 240.
Very nice PCGS, thank you. The lunch was very good! Then the new "SHOP" feature was unveiled and talked about. It will be interesting to see how well that works.
I'll have to play around with it a bit.

After lunch, I went and visited with Great Collections where I was able to meet Ian and Nina for the first time even though we have exchanged numerous phone calls and
emails over the last year plus. They have always been wonderful to deal with and were very nice in person as well. Since I never got around to filling out the consignment
paper work before today, I had to take up a bit of table space doing that. It was nice and relaxing. I think it took me a lot longer to fill out the forms because Nina was
such a welcomed distraction. It wasn't her fault that I was distracted with her...or maybe it was her fault? imageimageimageimageimage
I consigned just about my entire collection to them. I will start over with a new coin collection one day. I had a lot of fun building that collection.

After leaving Ian and Nina, I decided to try my luck at Cherrypicking. I hoped to Cherrypick something that would at least cover my expenses for the day.
I started at row 1600 and walked through row 400. I had already waled row 100 earlier so I guess I only missed rows 200 and 300. Here again, I
did not have a ton of time so I focused primarily on the tables where I saw high mint state Mercury Dimes in slabs at tables that were not too busy with customers.
While walking the aisles, I saw Todd, Charmy, Brandon, TomB and a few others. I also saw the circus that was invited to the show.
A certain company had a cable TV show reality "star" around for a while it seems. I did see a bit of hoopla associated with it I guess
and a line that was about half the length of one aisle....people all waiting to do whatever the heck they were doing. Lol. I did hear a female police officer yell at some patrons of the "coin show"
that there were too many people in the aisle at one particular point in time. That was certainly pretty classy for the event I am sure.
Towards the very end of my walk, I found a 1937-S DDO FS-101in an NGC MS67 unattributed holder. I picked that up for Blue Sheet Bid which was a little more than
what NGC MS67 examples have sold for at auction but I was okay with that. It was only an extra $15 or so. I then walked the coin over to Great Collections,
filled out another consignment form and left it with them. The coin was pretty nice. The luster was all there but truthfully I did not examine it too closely for
hits/marks so I am not sure if it would cross to PCGS MS67. It doesn't matter. It was a pretty nice coin and it will be a quick flip that will more than cover my gas and snacks for the day.
I did see two other Cherrypicks that I could have taken advantage of but they were not really worth the trouble so I let them stay. One was a 1941-S FS-502 in MS65. I
can't recall what the other one was.

As for the show itself, on a broad spectrum type of approach...I heard many dealers answer the "How's the show been for you?" question. I asked it to a couple of
people that I knew but mostly it was just me over hearing the conversation of others. I probably heard close to a dozen answers, if not more. The answers landed in the realm of
average, slow, medium, busy but not selling much, much slower than last year....and things like that. Nothing scientific at all, just a sampling of conversations that I heard. Some
people blamed it on metal prices and some said it has been slow since the Kennedy mess last year. I will say that a lot of this feedback was not at the High End nicer tables so I am sure
that story could be very different! Quality over quantity every time. Top Pop and Quality Stuff with pretty green and gold stickers does seem to always be in demand; at least that is
what I think.

Upon my exit, I took another pedi-cab to my vehicle. It was a nice cool ride. It was quite possible that I would face precipitous traffic close to rush hour but I made out nicely.
There were a few slow downs but I made it back to my home area in about 1 hour and 40 minutes. It was a nice day. image

Thanks. In due time. I will focus on photography and other things life has tossed in my direction. I imagine it will be a while. In the meantime I will attend larger local shows to Cherrypick and make a little money when I can. Gotta stay in the game a little bit in order to choose my next direction. image

Thanks for the report. It was a fun but somewhat sad read. The sad part, of course, is your sale of your collection. But, hopefully just as you say, it won't be long until you start anew. Anyway, thanks for the report. I can't go this year and these reports really help me feel as if I attended.

Thanks everyone. I did have fun at FUN. Since I was able to Cherrypick many Top Pops in my collection and others that have long sold, I am coming out on top which is nice....but that will likely be a topic for another thread. As for the direction of the next collection, your guess might be as good as mine. As for when I might start building it, that might be a year or two out. I will still play and have fun in the meantime. image
