<< <i>The coin was purchased for $76 the first time it appeared in an auction in 1879. >>
Must have been quite an auction, I wonder what else was on the block >>
That's $1831.33 in 2011 dollars. I wonder how much longer the coin can appreciate at over a thousand times the rate of inflation.
As far as the annoying word "penny" goes, it looks like the writer was struggling for synonyms while already using "one-cent piece" and "copper cent." I guess it will do.
<< <i>No doubt there are morons out there looking through their pocket change for one. >>
If you look at some of the comments below the story you'll find the following.... "Holy moly. I'm going to look through my barrel of pennies right now..."
I wonder what $76 in 1879 is adjusted for inflation.
Rohan's job seems like such a dream job - to make big $$ dealing in all manner of fine collectables.
Heritage President Greg Rohan says the copper cent is rare because the design was changed soon after production started in March 1793. He says critics at the time thought the chain evoked an image of slavery.
Wow, didn't know the pc police went that far back.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
Some may say the chain represents the "Great Chain" which was stretched across the Hudson during the Revolution. A "super weapon" of the era which contributed greatly to our Victory.
