Can someone please help with a value question?

I just finished a complete Kennedy half dollar set with proofs and silver proofs. I have no idea what this set is worth all coins are uncirculated and mint state. The early silver coins are better than average with some cameo proofs and SMS coins. The set is in a Dansco 8166 album. The coins are mostly bright white. What's it worth?

All I can tell you is recent eBay sold transactions.

    $799 - December - 170 coins 1964-14 all coins (Buy it now)
    $699 - October - 170 coins 1964-14 all coins (Buy it now)
    $580 - October - 1964-2012 all through 2012 (auction)
    $358 - October - 1964 - 2009 all through 2009 (some circulated - auction)

Quite a range there, probably depends if you list it as buy it now and someone wants one. Normal auction I would say $600-$700?

I think that a normal auction would be a bit lower but it really depends upon the condition of the coins.

Value will be condition dependent.....as well as market venue (i.e. BST, Ebay etc)...Cheers, RickO

The way modern's have been going on eBay you might get face if you put it out there in a true auction. image
  • They are all in great condition all in mint state. Some are toned. Some have proof frost like I have never seen. Thanks for the help.

There have been many fugly sets sold on eBay, that probably contributes to keeping prices down.

All you can really do is itemize the value of each coin then if you want to sell it put it in a mid sized auction with a reserve of about 75% of that value. If it sell, great, if not you can probably assume it's actual value is less than the reserve.

very slow area and a terrible time to sell these sets. Lots of nice sets to be had and very little demand.

700 would be a rational price assuming the set is above average and you can find a buyer in the current market in a reasonable time.

BST is a good first stop to market the set , Ebay is a good option but your losing 90 bucks at the gate in fees when you sell it.

I saw a guy a couple of tables down at a show pick up such a set calculating the silvers at 97% of melt and cupro nickel at 60c each. I believe he then priced it at his website in nice album and sales hype at $695. Later I heard with no takers he sent the silvers off for slabbing and dunno where the cupro nickel ended up.

  • I just got $600 in trade value at a local shop. Now I'm a happy owner of a 1909 S V.D.B. In XF condition.

Seems like a decent trade, the last few graded XFs on eBay went 800-1000, I'd rather have one of those vs a set of kennedy's personally.

Kennedy and Ike sets are among the very few complete collections for which you can
consistently get a premium for being complete. Finding buyers can be difficult because
these sets vary widely in quality. Wholesale for the set is in the 550 area but whole-
salers are picky and want pretty nice coins.

I'd imagine eBay prices will be all over. Don't buy low quality sets because you might
    never get your money back.

  • It's an honest XF40 in an old small ANACS slab. I love it. I'm torn if I should crack it out and get it in some better plastic. What u think?
  • The good thing is I took out all the coins from 1964-1971 and kept them for a short set. They are all beautiful and the proofs and SMS are cameos. I replaced then with run of the mill coins. I think I might have another $600 in those coins alone. I have some real clean MS silvers and deep cameo proofs and SMS.

Congrats. That cent is a much better holding. Why crack it. If it's properly graded, leave it be.

Nice set! I'm surprised nobody mentioned the " variety/error" aspect? Whatever your beautiful set may be worth in the end might not be the final value! Meaning, your set might contain many of the highly sought after varieties and errors that can be worth a pretty penny when calculated. Your set can actually DOUBLE in value when the variety/error coins are added in the mix? You may not get into this area but if you want more bang for your buck, I wouldn't leave MONEY on the table If I were you. Just a suggestion. Nice set regardless. I love the Kennedies. Congrats. on your complete set.image Example: The 1964 Proof " Accented Hair" Variety. Very popular to variety collectors, Esp. in a Cameo and/or high grade. Example: 1966 SMS "no FG" Very nice premium! These are just a couple.
