What is a First Day of Issue label worth?

HATTRICKHATTRICK Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭✭✭
Saw a First Day of Issue label for an NGC 2015 Proof Silver Eagle. ( for coins purchased on the first day ).
The retail price was over a $ 100 more that a regular blue label Early Release coin.
Do you think a coin bought from the mint on a specific day, everything else being identical, is worth a $ 100 more than one purchased the next day?

I say NO WAY. What are your thoughts?

I also say "no way" while at the same time thank those who disagree and thus provide TPGs with a revenue stream that doesn't have to come from my pocket.

Pcgs gets $65 to grade a $49 coin. I hope they grade a Ton at the show. Wondercoin

Paper stock is cheap and so is ink. The biggest expense is the labor to print it and put it in the holder.

Considering all that, I'd say it's worth about $1.26

    The premium should be zero.

In my mind, first day or first strike commands no premium.

That's a great way to think of it.

There are people that value Official US Mint trash ( I'm thinking waffled coins) so why not First Day of Issue?

If they try hard enough they might come up with many more labels also.

    Agree 100%
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

They do if a collector sets First Day or First Strike as their "personal" goal.

I can understand having that goal but it's really a fools game IMHO.

To many the $100 is just a piece of paper too. image
