Full bands or not? Not this time.

I took a gamble on this one. What say you?

I'm cracking it out and sending it in next week & we'll see what happens. I think it will make FB.

Looking for Top Pop Mercury Dime Varieties & High Grade Mercury Dime Toners.
Middle band looks a little weak but could use better pics.

<< <i>I think that it should be FB. I cannot tell from your pics but one small ding across the bands should not limit the grade, or the FB designation. FB should relate to the quality of the strike and not to a small PM issue with the bands.

A hit across the bands does in fact eliminate a Merc from getting the FB Designation, here and ATS...99+% of the time from what I have seen. I have seen an exception though.

Probably a coin that has seen the grading rooms a few times. They don't give out MS66 FB grades to just any 1945-P merc. It looks to have a few marks on the face/neck. It could have been net graded from 65 to 66 because of the nice strike. If I owned it I'd probably be in no rush to re-submit it. Rather, I'd like to show it to a number of people I know that are much better on FB Mercs than I am, especially on those with lots of experiences on the 1945. While it technically is nowhere near a 100% Full Banded coin, that's not the criteria for being "assigned" a "FB" label.
if you send it in...which you should...several times if necessarily...have them truview it
Sure looks like the real deal to me.
Close up pics through a magnifier might settle it.
Perhaps a strike across fully struck bands may limit the FB designation, but I often see significant strikes across the cheek of Ms. Liberty and they are a 66???
Not for my money.

It may take several resubmissions to get the designation on such a high profile coin though.

You may want to send it as "Regular Service" @ $32 per coin (plus fees) for coins up to $3,000 or just bite the big one and ship it "Express" @ $55 per coin (plus fees) for coins valued up to $20,000.
I'd just opt for a Regular submission myself.
Just insure it properly if you're convinced.
Have you considered it may come back as an MS 65 coin? Is there any chance based upon what you're seeing?

I think I will send it in for the Express service. I don't see it coming back as a 65, but if it came back as a 65FB or 65+FB, I would obviously have no problems with that! I think it is a solid 66 dime. I don't think it has a chance at a 66+, but it might get a green bean on a good day. In looking at it again with my LED lighted magnifier, I can get the light just right and get a continuous unbroken shadow in the valley in between the central bands. In my opinion, these bands are fully split, and while not bread loaf full rounded, they are more so than many dimes I have in my collection that are designated FB.
I think PCGS should grade and designate the reverse and the bands first, then look at the obverse, as I think there is a different grading scale for the 45-P's, and in my opinion that is wrong.
We'll see what happens! I'm crossing my fingers!!!

Good luck. The world needs more standout coins.
I may try to walk it through next year at the Houston Money Show.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
From my recollection of seeing other 1945-P FB dimes in-hand and by photo that one is very close. It's better than some I've seen labeled FB. And it's better than nearly all the "close-ones" I've seen over the years. Obverse is quite sharp. It could have been netted to MS64 FB which would have been quite a score. I don't think I've ever seen a truly "full band" 1945-P other than proofs. Good luck on your quest.
Pretty sure I have never seen a 1945 Proof Mercury dime. Oops...

Guess I haven't seen one either. What you don't collect, you do tend to forget. It is true that only a very tiny % of Full Band business strike Mercs truly match the split as seen on proofs.
