Are no reserve .99c start auctions doing well there or is it still too risky?

Best buy I ever made at GC was a no reserve auction starting at 99¢.
I felt bad for the seller.
    When in doubt, don't.

I still sell no reserve coins in GreatCollections, but also some with reserves - it just depends on the coin in my opinion. I've heard Ian make recommendations to consignors for certain coin types/grades etc. to sell unreserved and others to have reserves - contact him for his opinion - he is sometimes on the boards here.

If you have a coin that folks want, and have not overpaid, then I think your fine,

But if you don't , you might better have a reserve or you will take a bath

I have sold quite a few things there, starting at $1...and have done well. Quality items will attract bidders. Common/problem/questionable items will sink like a rock....but that is the case anywhere. It also helps to promote the items daily via the BST and link to the items from there...have quality photos on the BST to make up for any shortcomings in photography/scans at GC and you should be fine.

If you have high demand quality stuff...with good photos...and good supplemental marketing on the BST/email lists/contacting folks that have registry sets etc etc...you should have nothing to worry about..IMO.

Edit: I have done this with Top Pop Varieties and several other coins.

None of the stuff I have an interest in ever starts at .99 cents.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I've sold over 50 bust halves on CG starting @.99. My CBHs had mixed results. Some went high, some as expected and more than I would like went cheap. I decided to list more rather than shy away, thinking this would attract more attention.

I don't see it as an extra fee.
More like starting with a 5% sellers fee for coins that sell for under $1000. If $1000 or more......0%.

I continue to buy coins below market value at ANY auction house where someone is kind enough to sell their coin with no reserve. For coins that do fine for no reserve, that is great for the consignor. I just concentrate on the ones that do poorly - and there are many!

I sold this one yesterday - bids started at $1.00:

    $2,980.00

This is definitely a rare coin, and who knows what it would bring. This was substantially more than the first 2 sales I saw on e-bay.

Claychaser. Two coins were actually sold last night I believe. Did you consign both of them, or just the one you linked?

    That auction did fine.

A seller on ebay who has an NGC DPL 70 for sale says that there are ONLY 631 coins WITH THE EARLY RELEASE SP70 DPL.

That is a lot of 70 DPLs.

Everything I've bought on GC was a mega rip... I'm just sorry I forget to venture on their site regularly as others are getting all the deals image

100 % RISK on when a guy lays it out there.
100 % of the customers who buy from me using such a method are totally happy. Every auction house that allows customers to operate without restrictions should do well in the world. Those who restrict their customers from having a say will fall by the wayside.

Told a larger dealer yesterday that I'm seeing a lot of offerings on Sear's. I didn't know ColonelJessup was set up, too image

I think they're great ways if there is enough exposure. I've been supporting myself for many years buying on the cheap and selling it the same way.

Auction houses take a cut. They make their nut despite what sellers and buyers do. Just saying. All due respect to the "auctioneers". They rule the roost.
  • People whose income depends on real market results do not take unnecessary risks on GC, ebay or HA. Too much anxiety. And unless you are selling on ebay you can't pull the auction to correct your mistake. There is no magic to these auctions. You may be better off calling around getting straight offers with the specialists, that's what I did with some Bust coins that were high end and fully original. Also, non-unique type gold does not belong in these auctions when you can get straight offers from Rarcoa, etc..

And quite the spread between the 2. I wonder what made the difference?

Casman. The advertised coin did better. Perhaps some underbidder likely did not even know the other coin was for sale or he would not have bid so much to be the underbidder on the higher priced coin? Unless there were only two bidders in total at $2,900 and up? Obviously, two coins selling minutes apart for that difference in price is unusual. Wondercoin.

Thanks Wondercoin!! Having never consigned with GC is there a fee to be advertised? Here it seems it definitely paid off.
