Such an odd submission...

RampageRampage Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
Why would anyone counterfeit one-cent pieces if these dates? And, this submission has so many different types of coins that I see at least three submission tiers all on the same one.

That is bizarre. Maybe someone's testing PCGS?

That looks like a red flag to me too. I would guess before you go after trying to make more exspensive counterfeits, you want to see if your craft is good enough to squeak by the experts. I bet PCGS has the submitter marked for future submissions.

I'm not too familiar with these things, but for a variety of reasons I thought they used the term "Questionable Authenticity"?

Not if they are certain the coin is counterfeit. For coins too damaged to be sure one way or the other they will then use the questionable authenticity label.

To be fair, the 1970 cent was the size of a desert plate.

Just wondering how many of these coins you bought on eBay??

I share with you, though, that the submission process is not really complete when the coin(s) are body bagged without any explanation. Perhaps PCGS could offer a premium service wherein the grader justified the grade..... Then we have a chance to learn something!

Nope, they use both. See above comment regarding that.

May be a foreign submitter not familiar with US coins - just a guess.

That was my first thought. There were some fake multi-strike 1964 cents that came out in 1964 or 1965 that can now be proven to be counterfeits.

Given the low-value nature of the other coins in the submission, I would guess that the last three pieces are just plated.

The submittor probably thought they were off-metal errors. We see those all the time at the shop.
