How far will you go?

Coin shows come in many different shapes and sizes, from small one day coin club shows to major multiple day shows. In general I'm willing to drive about 2 hours each way to check out a new show.

I've driven to the Baltimore show a dozen times or so over the past 40 years......5-6 hours. 600 miles round trip. Not sure if I have another one left in the tank though.

In my early days I'd hit 3 to 5 coin shows in one day circling through CT-NY-NJ and back. The round trip was probably around 350 miles hitting the first show around 8-9 am and the last one around 2-3 pm.
Seemed like they had a lot more coin shows back then where you could actually find something fresh each time.

In 1988 I drove 4 hours to a Sat/Sun coin show in Pennsylvania. It could have been the annual state show. Arrived around Sunday noon and found that 80% of the dealers had left early. Grrr.

Baltimore Show once a year for a couple of days, seven hour drive image
  • The most I have driven to a coin show so far is about 1 and 1/2 hours, but for a major national show I would drive 3 maybe 4 hours.

Depends on the location as well. Long Beach is a days drive but I would rather stay out of Cali.

I've driven 3 hours and will probably do 3 two times in 2015.
You can tell I enjoy a good coin show

Furthest I've gone is the Long Beach Expo, which is about a 1/2hr drive from home.

I usually hit one or two big shows a year. That trip involves a 3 hour drive each way to the airport, the flight, and transportation to/from the venue. At a minimum it's 5 hours of travel each way, if I can get a direct flight.

But that was when I had an iron butt. No mas.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

How long is the flight from Fargo, ND to Orlando, FL? I think 2.5 hours. I would drive to Minneapolis, MN to a show though I think thats 4 hours.

I hear ya Chumley. I farthest I drive is 3 and a half hours south to Boston.

I can understand why a dedicated collector would drive from Fargo to Minneapolis. Last January a friend and I drove from Minneapolis to a show in Fargo. That's real dedication.

I used to do 8 hours to get to FUN - now, I prefer to fly. I suppose my max now is about 2.5 hours which is about how long it takes to get from home to Atlanta. Of course, if I had a real incentive - say, to close a good deal - that's a different story.

Furthest that I've driven is 2 or so. I'm looking to change that and wouldn't mind driving 5-6 to a big show.

There was a show here last week ( Historical bourse, SF) that I was very excited to go to...in the end, a 1 hour drive proved to be just too far image
The demands on my time usually make coin shows an impossibility, thankfully there is the Internet !
