GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 17,910 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would love to meet Rick, he seems like a stand up guy on the Pawn Star series.
Maybe Charmy will be co-signing autographs with Rick. image

From 12/16/14 NGC PR...........

The Pawn Stars casting team and Rick Harrison, star of the History Channel series, will be at the NGC booth January 9 to evaluate potential items for the show.

The Pawn Stars casting team will be at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) booth #1617 at the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) convention on Friday, January 9, from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Rick Harrison, the famous Pawn Star, will make a special appearance during the casting along with NGC grading experts including NGC Chairman Mark Salzberg.

The Pawn Stars are always on the lookout for sellers of unique and interesting historical items. If you have a rare item that you want to sell or pawn, now could be your chance to have Rick, Corey or the Old Man assess your valuable items and make you an offer you can’t refuse!

The Pawn Stars Casting Team will be at the NGC booth #1617 on Friday, January 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to evaluate potential items for the show. Sellers of all types of historical items are encouraged to come meet the casting producer. If you have coins, antiques, or any collectibles that you want to sell, then they want to meet you!

Interested people should be sure to bring the item with any accompanying paperwork or provenance. An item sheet must be completed and brought to the casting. Download the form.

Please note that the casting team will NOT be able to offer any appraisals. They will only be evaluating items to see if they are appropriate to appear on the show. If you and your item qualify and are selected, you could meet the Harrisons and be on and episode of Pawn Stars!

Stop by NGC booth #1617 for this exciting opportunity to be on one of television’s most popular shows!

I like Rick, but when it comes to my coins, I would rather have some members of this board or several other dealers at FUN evaluate them before him...

Lucky for him there will be lots of experts nearby. You know, just in case he needs to call one over.

He says 2014 Kennedy Gold 50c 69's are worth $1600.

I wonder how many he'll buy when he's there image
  • Seems like a cool guy. Not sure how long I'd stand in line, but it would be fun to meet him.
Let's try not to get upset.

I have not watched Pawn Stars since a year ago with the Microsoft ad campaign that the Chromebook or "any computer without Windows" is not a real computer and is pretty much
just a brick. Seeing the commercial in exactly the same style as the program, stating something that is false, just left a bad taste in my mouth, because anything on the program could be
just as false yet just as convincingly portrayed.

I'd wait in line to meet Rollins (and have him sign a slab!). I'd walk across the convention hall to avoid Rick Harrison.

I do enjoy the show as they have all kinds of interesting stuff there. Clearly a place to go if you want to sell for low wholesale price, but get paid in $100s. Don't get caught up in coin valuations as we all have better sources than their "expert" on the show. This is about publicity, not coins. Maybe NGC coins will be featured on the show more regularly. However, we ALL know PCGS brings the money for an equal coin.

Wouldn't mind meeting Rick, the rest of the cast I could do without.
  • Pawn Stars is a painfully fake tv show to try to watch. I can't understand why anyone would waste their money or time standing in line to meet any of these guys. Behind closed doors, I have little doubt that they are literally laughing all the way to the bank at the people that have bought into them as famous celebs or people of any real importance. Come on, NGC.... An important and respected figure from the coin world would have been a much better and fitting guest for FUN.

I can see a long line forming at the NGC table with art, antiques, toys, etc. Just don't trip over that 19th century barber chair. image

Why would I ever sell something for half price to a pawn broker - no matter how (in)famous?

My ego doesn't need feeding by being on TV or other media (been there and it isn't worth it), so I don't plan to bring anything to NGC's table.

There are far better venues to sell my treasures.

But I have to admit, it is a good PR stunt for NGC.

  • I watched the show in the past for laughs but stopped a good while ago after reading to many articles related to the melting of stolen silver coins and the loose laws being exploited by the shop. I don't have a significant difference of opinion when it comes to the plastic protecting my coins (unless selling) as the coin is the important thing but to me it is a bad move on NGCs part to make labels for the show. I do also understand that the labels and the PR will bring much more interest in coins to those that previously had no interest just because of the labels. Will the first labeled coin be worth 100,000.00 or more, we will have to see. NGC could place a grading expert at the shop in Vegas to do spot grading and encapsulating as a sonic welder could be setup on site to close up the slabs. I would also ask that anyone going to meet the stars bring some Proactive for Corey Ricks son as his acne always drove me crazy. Grab a bunch of the pennies (cents) the old man hoards and go to a dermatologist.

Pawn Stars, while interesting is not a top tier show. NGC, while skilled at grading is not the top grading service. Probably a match, IMHO. However, the all know PCGS gets the money as that is where they have gotten their coins graded in the past for the most part. Not sure it benefits either to any degree other than cross marketing and getting brand visibility.

The slabs may interest slab collectors after the run fizzles out. I can't see this having legs, but I also have no idea of their contract terms.

Met the old man a few years ago when I stopped by the Vegas shop. Nice gentleman.

Would be reluctant though to offer any item of real value to them.

    That goes without question.
Typical pawn shops only look at the gold or silver content in an old coin.....numismatic value???? Huh? What?
Now, if your pawn shop is televised on national TV....numismatic value comes into play and is now the hook.

There was a holed 1895-O Morgan in the case with MS details. Card alongside stated that the coin was worth $20,000 plus without the hole, but only melt in the damaged condition. Under that it said "not for sale".

Hell, I would have paid a hundred or two for the coin.

PCGS could blow them away if they looked towards the recent past.

Get Derek Jeter in there to sign certs for the HOF coins or pay to have the Mint COA autographed. FS designation carries only on a reholder for the signed label, otherwise the usual qualifications must be met for newly submitted coins.

    This.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

Yet is serves as an excellent prop to "justify" offering melt for rare coins with damage.

What Tom b said. Not on my list of people to talk with at the show.
  • I wonder how much Pawn Stars pays for gem common date gold coins? If you walked into their shop with rare Civil War date gold would they have to be all there for grade and CAC for them to make a decent market offer? What are their buy/sell spreads on coins and currency? Do they employ the typical scheme of harsh critical analysis when buying then no budge pricing when selling? Since they started making $25K each and up per episode how has that affected their profit margins percentages? Have they actually gotten more greedy?

FWIW, when silver was in the $40 range, (or even lower) they were selling rounds with the old man's picture for $60.
