'79 SBA Souvenir Set - What's wrong with the Denver?

StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was looking at a standard green-envelope 1979 Dollar Souvenir Set, primarily to see if the P was a near or far date, and noticed the Denver coin, well... looked like crud.

The D and the FG are pretty much filled, and the IGWT was very thick compared to the P/S. Initially started thinking a Class VI doubling, but found zero reference to any variety with the '79-D, so... did they just beat the dies to death with the SBA's?

Forgive the pictures, shooting through the cellophane stinks.

Yep, very late die state. Much overused die.

I had a similar observation and posted a while back HERE
The Very Late Die State is most likely the culprit.

The blob "D" MM reminds me of the many I've seen on the Kennedy half on the obverse "D".

There wasn't a quality control czar assigned to oversee the inspectors of the work being performed at the "pressman's" work station. This , in turn, led to over use of some dies, particularly in the modern era of economics/ numismatics. It's always about production costs.

But that's looking deeper than the late die state, we explain away. image

Here's an old thread about how the Denver Mint packaged Mint Sets in that era:
