My New Mick (51B) - Thanks to Matty & Griffins

Still shaking a bit. Pretty sure it's excitement, but it could be the 15 cigarettes I've had the last few hours of negotiating this.

My company's acquisition was announced in October and approved last week. Shares sold yesterday and cash available today.

I decided I deserved a treat. After clearance from the wife, I chased down a card I've been wanting for some time, but was never quite sure I'd ever own.

When the acquisition was announced I did start eyeing them. I even reached out to Matty (DM23HOF) for advice. He turned me on to a beautiful 2 at LOTG.

With our sale not final and not being familiar with auctions outside of eBay, and buyer premiums etc., I had to let it go.

Lo and behold, the same card recently popped up on eBay at a much higher price. But was by far the nicest in my price range. With the help of Griffins I got contact info for the seller and after a few rounds of negotiation, came to a price we could both live with. Well over VCP, by about 25%, but it was the right card at the right time, at a "right-enough" price.

I am now/soon-to-be the proud owner of...

Rotated the other way for those who would rather see it this way.

Nice work Jim. Congratulations on capturing a beautiful example of an iconic card. I know it's heresy to some but from an aesthetic point of view I have always liked this more than the 52 Topps card. Throw in the fact that it is his true RC and you've got one of the more underrated cards in the hobby. I've been searching for one for a while too but my love of basketball cards has derailed me from saving up enough to get a nicely centered one of these.

Wow Jim, incredible card for a great guy! This should make all the centering guys happy too. I love the 51B set and the Mantle is iconic. His only RC if you ask me. If I could own one Mantle, it would be this one, hands down. And what a great example! Congrats!

Jim ... so basically you paid the "3" price for your "2". BIG DEAL! It presents AMAZINGLY well for a "2". Fantastic pick-up. I hope you enjoy the card.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Great pick up, that's a great looking 2!!

Major props. Hard to find 2s or 3s that hit the eye as nicely as that one does. Plus the centering is so elite and rare for the card. The color is deep and bold. Glad you and that card were able to connect in the end!

That's a great looking 2. Color and focus are top notch. Congrats on the pickup!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Y'know the first thing that stood out to me with this card? The registration. It is dead nuts perfect. Look at the sharpness in Mantle's face, the shine on his left cheek. Congrats!

Jim congrats on the 51B Mick! I would love to add a card like that to my collection. Great eye-appeal for the grade and thanks for sharing.

Jim, first off congrats on your company's acquisition!!! Must be have been almost as crazy as negotiating for that bad boy. I agree that the 1951 Bowman is a sharp card. image

Thanks boys. I'm looking forward to having it in hand, hopefully Thursday.

And I should have been more clear in that it's 1st Ballot HOF, and I just need Mays and Jackie, and to sub Gwynn, Boggs and Maddux.

Congrats on that gem. In my opinion, any Mick is a great acquisition - the rookie card just makes is so, so much better.

Coin collectors, as I remember, have a nice term for when a coin was struck just right, and the clarity of the front and back comes out just right. I think the term is "a good strike". Us card collectors often come to greatly appreciate a card with crisp print registration and clarity, well-focused, as some say. Buddy, any time you can get a card with the truly beautiful and clear registration as you have done, you have done right well. The fact that it is a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle should put you on a cardboard cloud 9 for many weeks to come, or actually whenever you take the time to relish this baby. Heartiest of congratulations on a nice acquisition. Way da go, bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, thanks guys for helping out a fellow collector with a dream card.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Helped make my day, honestly. ----Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)
