Nice little Wheat Cent Suprise

I was cleaning up one of the few Wheat cents that I find and found an 0 for the third digit. Actually it has a very strong date. No "S". There is still a lot of crud on it and maybe some of that will come off. Anyway it the first 1909 that I have ever found.

have you tried warm HP? Or a soak in oil could also do the trick. I have mineral oil, but have heard olive oil too. Heard if it's porous, olive oil can seep into the pores though?

I was actually cleaning it up in a rock tumbler with a bunch of clad. You couldn't even tell it was a Wheat Cent. I thought it was "just another penny".

I had the exact same thing happen to me last week, my first ever 1909 Wheat was too crusty to read the date initially. I found another 1909 a few days later though.

Acetone will remove organic debris, and olive oil (a looooooonnnnggg soak) will eventually clean it up too...Cheers, RickO
