I'd tell that kid not to buy "reprint" Gretzky rookies to fill in his sets, because, even though you're trying to do a good thing, a small handful of people will hold it against you, bully you and try to screw up your personal life because they have no lives of their own. Knowing me, I'd probably not listen
As a kid I was more concerned with quantity over quality. I'd rather have a hundred ok cards instead of one great one. I'd sell everything I had and get every high grade vintage card I could afford. According to the collecting bible during my younger years of collecting my favorite all time set (56 topps) could be had in mint condition for under 4 grand!
<< <i>Pass up those 87 Topps baseball cards at Woolworths and buy all those discounted 86 Fleer basketball packs and boxes. >>
I've had this thought about a million times....I've had dreams about it on several occasions.
The only thing that makes me feel any better about it is the fact that those 86 Fleers would have gotten the same treatment as the 87 Topps baseball; stacked haphazardly in a shoebox. Those beautiful red corners wouldn't have stood a chance.
I'd tell myself not to open all those 1968 baseball racks that I purchased with my paper route money, but instead to save them unopened--especially the one that had Seaver on top
"You tell 'em I'm coming...and hell's coming with me"--Wyatt Earp
Buy old unopened product, don't open it and let it gain in value. As for all the 1987 and on product in baseball I want to break? I'll tell myself it'll get much cheaper in years to come.
I would tell myself don't collect the extra pounds. Collect the fruit and veggies and stay slim. And, go to college. Maybe I wouldn't be unemployed if I did.
Card wise, Buy those '86 Fleer Basketball!

I graduated in 2012. Bachelor degree pretty much worthless. Only worth getting me into grad school or another certification program. Job wise, doesn't help.

but the 86 fleer basketball thing would probably be what i'd say...
Anything with Mantle on it grab it and put away.
See above for 86 Fleer basketball.
Go to place outside of Boston a few days before Alan Rosen and buy up all the 1952 Topps you can find
I would go on a buying spree using this
Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007
