It would be remiss of me if I did not dive in, especially considering that I obtained my all-time favorite piece of cardboard from my compadre and the creator of this very thread. Mind you, Marc didn't even have this card on the block. But a couple of messages/negotiation sessions later, and he was graciously willing to bid adieu to '64 Bob. A prototypical move from a rock solid CU member.

Great stuff, guys......hope to see much, much more.

Very nice Clemente, and call me a fan of the 8.5 grade. It is not as expensive as a 9, and the range is a lot smaller than an 8. I have seen a lot of 8's that were 7's but only very few that should have been 9's. Speaking of the 8.5 grade I have picked up a few nice cards in 8.5's, and still hoping to land a really nice cards in 8.5 if they are out there:

    1956 Mantle in 8(centered) or 8.5
    1956 Williams in 8(centered) or 8.5
    1957 Williams in 8.5
    1975 Ryan in 8.5

If anyone has seen these for sales or knows where they might be hiding I would appreciate it. Thank you and keep the great pictures coming.

Looks like that Big Train Portrait got graded on the day they divide the grade by two.

    That Thorpe is a beauty!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I love that 1978 rookie second baseman PSA 10. I used to trick or treat at Garth Iorg's house when I was a kid. I was in DC for work travel this summer and went to the Nationals and Brewers game and Garth gave me a baseball signed for my nephew (it was his birthday back home on that night). Garth was coaching first base for the Brewers. I also got a foul ball in the 9th inning of the game. Nice little collection of 1978s you have going.

Some outstanding cards from everyone. Really like the 49 Bowman Jackie Robinson and the Chamberlain rookie. I hope to add one of each to my collection next year. Here are my favorites. One from each of the big three. The Aaron rookie I was able to get for a great deal (well below VCP) which makes its my top pick. The Unitas I had to work very hard to get with some lengthy waiting and negotiating and the Alcindor rookie was a birthday present from the Wife.

Here's my favorite pickjp of the year, but technically, I've still got it on layaway and am paying it off every month so I don't have it in my possession yet, but I should be done in about 4 months. Over 522 years old, and from the highly desirable year of 1492.

The Catholic Monarchs, and two people very influential in the discovery of the Americas.

Document signed by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in the Summer of 1492 (yes, THAT King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) as Columbus prepares to set sail for the Indies in nine days and the remaining Jews – all were expelled by edict – prepare to leave Spain within eight days

Manuscript Document Signed “Yo el Rey” [I the King] by King Ferdinand V of Spain and “Yo la Reyna” [I the Queen] by Queen Isabella I of Spain, 1p, 8.5” x 6”. In Spanish, not translated. Penafiel [Spain], July 25, 1492.

Countersigned “Fernando Alvarez,” the Queen’s confidential adviser and secretary. Docketing on verso. Remnants of prior mounting at lower edge on verso. Fine condition.

hi Ndoggy. or whoever you are. image

card has no 3rd party grading history to my knowledge and is currently unplugged. there appears to be no evidence of foul play, however, the card seems to have a slight hook at the upper right, kind of like a Scott Norwood potential game-winning field goal attempt.

Not sure who you are referring to. So with the hook would it be graded as trimmed or authentic? Appears to be trimmed by the scan.

This obviously isn't the most impressive card, but I think this one needs to win for my favorite of the year. I hadn't collected in about 15 years, and to make room during a move, I threw out thousands of junk wax cards, etc. I kept a few decent cards and went down to a local card shop to pick up some pages. They were selling unopened packs from an '82 Fleer box, and I bought one on a whim. Pulled the Ripken RC.

    image

Well, that was as good as crack for me, and I dove back into collecting. The last few months have been great fun. Here is my close second for favorite pick-up this year - my first Mick.

Awesome story about falling back in love with this hobby. And my 11 year old is slowly working on a raw, low grade 54 bowman set, so he'll do backflips when I show him your Mantle.

DB - thanks & good luck to your son on his '54 set. I have a couple raw HOF from that set & will PM you later to see if it's anything he needs.

Why so flustered? Just making an observance on the card. This is a card forum.

Forgot these two I picked up earlier this summer - always one of my favorite cards as a kid and a tough #1 card. Picked up the PSA 9 because I could never find an 8.5, and as soon as I grabbed a 9 the next week a pair of 8.5's shows up - had to grab both of them image

I recently picked up my first fleer jordan rookie card. Bought it raw for a great deal, not the best condition. It's currently at beckett getting slabbed, expecting 4-5.

There are some really nice cards and unopened you guys have.

My favorite pickup of the year wasn't an addition to my collection. My 14 year old son has been a fan of Pete Maravich since he was 7 or 8 and started playing basketball. This past year he decided he wanted to sell the majority of his baseball cards and autographs and become a Maravich "super collector". As he usually does he saved his allowance and did as many odd jobs in the neighborhood as he could to raise cash for our annual trip to the national, this year he also had extra because of the ebay sales I did for him. He hoped to find some Maravich items but his dream was to find a certified autograph in his price range. While we were there we met up with a Baton Rouge area dealer that I have met a few times over the years. He and my son started talking Maravich and he ended up pulling out a great autograph with JSA letter and then slashed the price so that it could get somewhere near my son's budget. He still wasn't quite there so I gave him a wink and threw in what he needed to get it done. We have bought a lot of cards and stuff but this was the happiest I ever saw him at a card show. Forgive the bad scan and tacky price tag.

We don't agree much on who should win the AL West every season, but this is one of the coolest pieces I've seen. I love this kind of stuff for the same reason I collect old books and manuscripts.

    Terrific item, Mike, just amazing.
