What has been your one favorite pick up of 2014?

I have picked up a few things this year that I feel have complimented my collection but it wasn't until just recently that I finally picked up Jeters 93 SP in a 9. I still am excited today as the day I got it in had. It was a card that I had wanted for a while.

Doesn't have to be your most expensive, just the one that you were most excited to get. Share yours.

I picked this up in April of this year.

There are two types and the Italian back is the best copy regardless of what EBAY descriptions state.

Two gorgeous cards there, homies. The Tyson looks truly gem mint, and that Jeter has got to be as high-end a 9 as can be found. In this day of scans, too often a beautiful card's flaws can be magnified, when in hand it looks great. Yet even in scan form those two look super strong.

Well, this is my favorite pickup so far this year. A card I've always wanted to own, thought I never would, in a grade beyond what I could have imagined....

    image

I say "so far" because I'm meeting Yaz in ONLY SIX DAYS and the card I hand to him, watch him sign and hand back to me will immediately become the most treasured item in my collection.
  • I had always wanted a Jackie Robinson card and had an opportunity about 10 years to get one, but couldn't come up with all the cash. Got this one for my birthday and love looking at this every day.

Chris, 56 Topps baseball is my favorite set of all time, and you can't do much better than Jackie!

just closed, so don't actually have it in hand yet, but I have to agree w/ brent's assessment on "how could this be an 8?" it's a perfectly centered Milton version and a pop 8 w/ none higher, so I am super stoked. I think it's head over heels better than the 9 that closed in the same auction...

I love those '67 stickers. The cartoonish words are pretty cool. Don't have any yet, except the modern day Topps Archives cards, but would love to have one someday.

Does the Milton version say "Milton" on the back? Are these the cards that were issued with the board game?
  • begsu1013begsu1013 Posts: 1,943 ✭✭
no, just a slight different color on the back. there is usually a little white strip that runs along the bottom of the card (if you are holding the psa holder upright). this white strip is a result of the football card that was below it on the mb sheet. you can kinda see one here predominantly on the top left corner of pic used. but, yes, they were inserted w/ the game along w some football and cars cards....

Got back into card collecting late this year, but here we are:

Favorite pick-up. This is the first card I bought my son. Gave it to him on his first birthday July 24th. This will be a long-term set for us to build together.

    Runner-ups:

This dead centered Gretzky OPC (first one for me in 10 years)

The 1989 Topps Hockey cards I started putting together. Have bought 26 more boxes since I took this picture

I love the 89s because I collected them as a kid and I still love ripping wax packs open. Can't afford '79 to '88 OPC wax (not a fan of Topps those years) so building an all PSA 10 set of 89s (following the strict rule that every card must be pulled from a pack) satisfies my desire to build a set, as well as rip packs.

Go with Superman! What kid doesn't like Clark Kent?

Those were a test issue and I believe they were only issued for the Red Sox and Tigers. I'd love to see your photos when you land one.

I love the 1986 OPC Savage and Elizabeth!

What would you say the "retail price" is on that one?

I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

The last one to sell went for $154 if I recall. It had sold a year or so prior for closer to $175. It had very weak centering for a 10.

I think a copy like the one shown could fetch $250.

  • Thosebackpages, LOVING the 57 Mantle and the 55 Aaron. That 53 Mick is solid as well. Nothing like cards that blow their designated grade out of the water in terms of eye appeal.

2014 has been a big year for me and is now "unofficially" over from a purchasing standpoint. These two go hand in hand and bookend 2014 as my 1st and last pick ups.

I still do not believe I did this since I left the hobby for a couple years with no intention of returning with most of you who know me know why.

    I purchased a complete 1941 Play Ball set.Shape is about VG/Ex.

That's right: they were the first and last things you got! Pretty cool. The 52T is just sick with that far above-average centering. I know guys looking for a 51B in a range of grades, and that 4 is about as clean as can be, with centering that is pretty much the ideal for that card.

That Aaron in a 2 is crazy, and those are some beautiful Mantles. One thing I have learned from reading these boards is that the philosophy of buy the card and not the holder is the most important thing with cards. That Jackie is awesome and the Aaron in a 2 has to be seen to be believed. I have picked up a few cards this year that are pretty decent for the grade with centering and overall.

Nice eclectic mix of stuff here. For me, if I had to choose one pickup for the year, it would be this 1971 Topps Greatest Moments Reggie Jackson card:

Well there was that bikini clad brunette on the beach this past summer. Other than that it would have to be buying/ripping 2+ year old baseball boxes/packs at good discounts. Still the most fun part of the hobby for me.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

DM - awesome job on the Mantle's. Which do you prefer grade notwithstanding of the two? Also, be curious as to the range you paid for them, and you can PM me to keep it confidential. Williams was always my favorite from that area, but I got to spend some time with Mickey and have some neat personalize stuff from him - will have to post it on here if I can find it readily available.
