Help in Denver Colorado

I am a long time lurker and a first time poster. I am looking for the boards help with a good family friend of mine who is 85 years old and wants to liquidate a very large coin collection. The main parts of his collection are 3-400 AU and UNC silver dollars that are not slabbed, many complete coin books inclusive of rare dates, unopened bank wrapped rolls of silver dimes, quarters, nickels, and pennies back to the 50's. He also bought 5 mint sets and proof sets every year since 1958 along with many silver mint offerings over the years. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have personally looked at the collection and have determined that I do not have the expertise to help him get rid of it. He is worried that something will happen to him and his wife will be stuck with it and not have any knowledge of what he has and be ripped off. I heard her say she wanted to take the pennies to the bank! I stopped that immediately. I have helped him lay out all of the collection on a large table in his basement and a couple of huge trunks were all of the proof and mint sets reside by date.
We are looking for a reference of someone trustworthy that can be recommended to help us navigate what the best ways are to make them go away for the best results for him and his wife. Ebay? Auction? Private sale? Thanks for any help you good folks can offer.

A good first start is picking up a copy or Whitman Publishing's Guide Book of U.S Coins. also known as the Redbook.
This will give you a general assessment of the values.
Someone here will no doubt recommend a reputable dealer in the Denver area that can offer further guidance.
Ebay is a good option for coins of modest value. Any keys would probably do better if graded and holdered by PCGS or NGC.
i'd offer to sit down with ya's and go over everything in person
patience is key here as with what you are doing here...asking for help
many make the mistake of selling too quick before they know what they have
selling a massive collection...like eating an elephant...one bite at a time
start with small lots as to not overload yourself
you'll warm up in the process
brush up on imaging skills...better images...better results
how exciting and best of luck to ya's
<< <i>Thanks- Have the red and blue books. I know the coins have worth. The question is how to maximize the worth for this gentleman's golden years and not have his wife have to deal with them if something happens to him. I have been a coin collector all my life but this collection's size and volume paralyses me. >>
as to prices...red and blue books...can be way off
market for common coins is too...yes even what some call rare are common
on this site...where you select which forum to enter is..."auction prices realized"...it's more accurate
as with this site...http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml
ebay advanced search...completed listing will gage what some coins are trading at
take what you know about grading and set it aside
brush up on
http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/
auction prices realized...will take you to auction images to see what grade is in holders
yeah...don't be too quick to standfast with your redbook/bluebook
take your time about this...just saying
Here is a list of dealers near you, I do not know how trustworthy they are or are not, but its a place to start.
I would have sent this info in a PM but you do not have the PM turned on in your settings

The best strategy is to strive for a fair offer on the whole collection and not try to squeeze the last dollar out of every coin. If you insist on getting top dollar for everything, you might chase off the legitimate guys and end up with the people will cherry pick the best, and leave you with the less desirable material. You need to remember that a lot of what he appears to have are not fast sellers for most dealers, especially in this market. The very rich are buying nice coins for high prices, but a lot of the average material is not selling well at the moment.
The owner is well advised not to leave his wife with the burden of selling the collection. There have been too many sad stories of how coin widows have been taken by unscrupulous buyers.
<< <i>Please turn on your PM function. >>
Yes, please do.
<< <i>Sounds like he could start his own B & M shop. >>
Sounds like he missed $40 silver by a few years, for most of it.
"silver and pennies going back to the 50s" .... don't need a redbook for that.
<< <i>Sorry but I am not that computer literate. My email address is bzwillinger@bsbleasing.com if this will help all of you. >>
In the upper right corner click on PROFILE, then scroll down to ALLOW PRIVATE MESSAGES and clicj YES, then save changes.
I used to live in Denver, many years ago.
You could try selling through the Buy, Sell, Trade forum. It is free.
I may be interested in the 1958-1964 proof sets. Turn on your PM function and send me a private message.
There are lots of people on the forums who would be willing to help. You may be able to find collectors who would buy some of the collection, allowing the owner to obtain a higher price than what he could get selling to a dealer whose buy prices would have to be low enough to give him a profit on his resale of same.
Those can be maximized with good pictures and selling on ebay with a mention on the buy sell trade forum that they are on ebay
Many sets from later years go for cheap, but there are some exceptions. The special premier sets can bring a nice premium.
You PM function is still not on
Mark Feld @ Heritage is who you should talk to. PM sent.

I evaluate such collections in person and I can give you an accurate assessment of the market value.

Good idea.
This place rocks!
People will kill to get a hold of those sets from the 50-60 era
<< <i>It's heartwarming to see all of these unselfish offers to assist. >>
Yes, almost like dealers getting in line for those Kennedy gold coins

Well, maybe lie and cheat but I don't think anybody here would actually kill for them.
Would they?
